‘Isn’t he fit?’
‘I bet he likes you,’
‘Yeah Stacey, you’re one of the most beautiful girls in this school,’
‘Are they lesbians?’ Abbey asked, knocking her knees together she slumped back against the wall and watched the three girls across from her natter away.
Shrugging, Cory simply crossed her arms over her chest and looked up towards the whiteboard as the dumbly sports teacher called for attention.
‘Welcome back girls! I hope you’re ready for another strong term of activities.. This week we’re doing Netball!’ mixed cries came from around the room and Abbey actually got up to give a little cheer, but was soon silenced as the teacher blew her whistle for order. ‘you’re going to be split up into two teams, I shall each give you a number one or two, and once you’ve been told please stand where your number has been designated.’ moving around the room the teacher began patting the girls heads, numbering then one to two before finally everyone had a number and was either on the left side of the changing rooms or the right.
Cory was a two and Abbey was a one, Jane was also a two and fat Mary had wandered in and was a one. After slipping into an orange bib Cory was ready to go and face the playground outside.
‘You’re going down,’ Abbey threatened playfully as she passed Cory in the doorway.
Shrugging this odd Cory followed slowly after her, her stomach lurching as she saw all the boys on the field behind the playground, all standing in their groups of friends; Swill with Pete and the rest of the GSE and Edward with a couple of strong built and business like boys.
‘Blonde girl!’
Spinning around Cory met eyes with the sports teacher, as she trotted towards her Cory read her badge and logged her name. Ms Harrison.
‘Are you sure you can play with that ankle?’ she asked pointing towards the bandage around Cory’s leg but the blonde nodded, hoping she wouldn’t be made to sit out. After squinting and muttering things to herself Ms Harrison finally agreed that Cory could play and so she made her way back over towards her team.
Jane stood daintily in the middle of the court, her arms wrapped her around and her legs separated she stared wide eyed at the ball which was coming towards her.
‘Catch it!’
Abbey however had faster reflects and jumped in front of Jane, catching the ball with both hands she pushed Jane from the centre spot and grinned as she was applauded for her catch.
‘Red headed girl takes over position of Centre. Jane you can be Goal Defence,’ waving her off Ms Harrison put the whistle to her lips and got prepared to start the game.

‘I can’t believe they fuckin’ cancelled football,’ Pete grumbled as he hopped from foot to foot on the playing field.
Swill shrugged, the boy sprawled out on his back, hands over his face he yawned lazily. ‘Didn’t you get enough football at that camp?’
‘Yeah, but the lads there were utter shit-’
‘They can’t be any worse than Swill,’ Ned spoke truthfully as he pulled up his collar and waved at the girls on the netball pitch, all he got in return was a bunch of giggles before they turned back to focus on their own game.
‘With a sex life like-’
‘Don’t fuckin’ start that again!’ Ned threatened, flashing the blonde boy a look, Swill simply moved his hands from his eyes and stared up at him.
‘We’ve all done it,’ Pete reminded him, but Swill then turned to Dave for help, the older boy however shrugged not knowing what to say.
‘Yeah, but I’m the only one with a girlfriend aint I!’ Swill spoke more proudly as he stood up and wiped the grass from his bum.
‘Aye, I wouldn’t be too sure about that, Bov’s going strong with that blonde over there,’ pointing towards the tennis courts Dave spotted Bov who had Stacey pressed up against the wire, tongue halfway down her throat.

Kirsten Dunham stared up the gold framed picture on the stairway, her eyes boring into the man that stood in the middle, a young blond child either side of him he smiled on. Stomach lurching the elder woman lowered herself down and sat on the middle step of the stairs, the washing basket on the step above her she was on her way to hand out clean washing when he’d caught her eye.
‘Name’s Geoff,’
Kirsten simply continued to rest her elbows on the bar, fine fingers twirling the straw that sat inside her lemon coke she hummed happily. Her friend was off at another table trying to sneak some drugs from a boy that looked like he was rather far up his Mother’s ass; suit tight and hair geld back so finely that it looked hard as stone.
Turning her head slightly she caught site of Julie as her hand slid up the boys thigh and towards his crotch, with a roll of her eyes Kirsten went back to her drink only to have Geoff leaning right in her face.
Blue eyes blinking, she stared at the man for a minute before she moved her lips down to her straw and busied herself with the alcohol.
‘What’s your name?’ the boy pressed on, taking the seat next to Kirsten he turned sideways on his seat before waving a hand and indicating the barman to come over.
‘Vodka and tonic, please,’ he ordered and the man behind the bar set to work as told.
After finishing her drink, Kirsten hesitated for a moment before turning to face the bothering stranger once more.
‘Alison,’ she lied easily, taking in the boys attire of jeans, a white vest and a blue shirt. Hair slicked up in a sort of quiff style and strong jaw chiselled, Kirsten had to admit he was one of the best looking boy that had tried to chat her up so far.
‘Kirsten, Kirsten, over here!’ Julie squealed waving around a small bag full of white powder.
Giving a sheepish look, Kirsten hopped down from her stool before making her way across the wooden flooring towards her bright blonde friend. Julie however spotted Geoff and grinned at him before shooting a wide smile towards Kirsten.
‘Bring your friend,’ she told her, more of an order than an offer, but all the same the teen boy looked happy and followed both girls out of the bar.
Back on the stairwell Kirsten heaved a large sigh as she reached behind her and took a fresh shirt out of the washing basket. Holding it before her she paused for a moment before hugging it to her chest and suppressing a small sob. She didn’t want them to turn out like him. They were smarter than that though, she had to trust them or she’d end up scaring them away and then she’d be alone. She didn’t want to be alone, she liked people around her to keep her busy in case she did stupid things.
She hadn’t really thought about how high it was until she was stood on the very edge. She could hear Steve crying from the bedroom but he’d just have to cry, she had other things running through her mind. A shaky hand came up to her cheek and she touched the purple and dangerous bruise. Wincing at the pain Kirsten soon pulled away and rubbed her eyes with the heel of her palm, smearing the already ruined mascara over her face.
Sniffing up glanced back down into the road, a couple of cars parked at the curb and a random blonde in a tight dress and bright leg warmers strutted past but that was all. No one would even notice… if she accidentally took another step forward and slipped from her balcony and down the sixth stories of flats. Even if someone was down there they wouldn’t care. Why should they? Geoff definitely didn’t care, he’d showed her what he really thought about their relationship only a few hours ago, after he’d downed a good amount of alcohol and been the perpetrator of her bruised cheek and many other marks.
Steve’s crying had silenced for a moment but Kirsten didn’t even notice as she slipped her hand into her pocket and pulled out the white pregnancy test. Holding it close to her face she squinted at what it said, just to make sure she’d read it correctly. Not again. She couldn’t handle another child, she couldn’t afford it, she didn’t have the patience for it, and what if it was like him?
