Grabbing a hoodie that she’d left slung over her table at the gun range, Lilly slipped into appreciably and rolled the sleeves up over her wrists so she could grip her sniper rifle more firmly. But in the guns stand lay a see-through water pistol, filled up to the brim with cold water. Wade stuck his head around into her booth and grinned down at her weapon.
‘Don’t shoot me, I’m not armed.’ His hands were up above his face when she squirted him in the eye, and sniggering she went in search of a different firearm. The armoury was massive, simply rows and rows of guns and even some bayonets. Her eyes lingered on the rocket launcher playfully and she reached out a finger to touch it with an excited smile. When would they ever actually really get to use these? The thoughts were sad because Lilly could seriously see her firing it. Zero’s hand clamped over hers and prised her fingers from the weapon.
‘Keep your hands to yourself.’ He warned, and Lilly scowled, forcing him away.
‘Same goes to you.’ Angrily, she snatched up a rifle and slung it over her shoulder before walking back down to her booth. Wade was firing devil-may-care at the target at the far end, and even though he looked like he wasn’t focusing, every shot went straight for the groin. ‘Wake me up like that again, and that will happen to you.’ Lilly whispered over his shoulder, glad to have disturbed him as one of the rounds hit the far wall with a chorus of loud dins.

John had been outside the door, and as Eve stormed away, Xavier had seen him. Not that he needed to see him to know the boy had been there. It didn’t matter; there was nothing they could do. Their search would be futile, because without Cerebro how did they really have a chance of finding Logan? Stryker wasn’t so unlike Xavier, but his locations were much more harder to track down. That didn’t stop the doubt from creeping in, that one day those two wouldn’t be here, having begun their own quest. Maybe they needed to learn.
Eve was halfway down the stairs when John caught up her heels and ran alongside her, talking hurriedly. Before he could even get a full sentence out, Eve had forced him against the side of the stairs, his back arching uncomfortably against the bannister. ‘Stop following me, will you?’ she snapped, pushing him back and taking the last few stairs two at a time. ‘I don’t want your help – how is your eye by the way? Maybe when you learn how to fight and age a couple of years, you’ll stand a chance. Go back to your lesson.’

John raised an eyebrow. ‘Dude, you’re meant to be teaching my lesson.’ He glared down at her, the bruise around his eye making it stand out prominently. If only she knew how many girls he had had beneath him because of that bruise. Girls liked the bad boys. She blinked, wiping her hands on her jeans. What had got into her? ‘Uhm, sorry, John.’ She muttered, spinning round and walking hurriedly away. She should have gone to the lesson, there was at least half an hour left and it was better late than never, wasn’t it? But she found herself walking straight past the classroom and down the hallway. She didn’t realise she was crying until Hunter caught her arm and pulled her round to face him, his face the usual mask of concern. He reached up, wiping away a tear with his thumb. ‘Eve, what’s wrong?’ He asked gently. ‘I-I kissed him,’ she stuttered, tears falling freely now as she threw herself into Hunter’s arms. She felt him stiffen but she couldn’t stop herself. She needed to tell someone, she needed it out of her system. ‘I kissed Bradley - I didn’t mean to but he came and I should have stopped him but I kissed him back.’ Hunter grabbed her shoulders and pushed her back so he could look her in the eyes. ‘Bradley? One of them? Eve...’ His hands dropped from her shoulders and he looked away, hurt flashing across his face. ‘I’m sorry.’ She sobbed and reached for his arm but he moved away. He shook his head at her and turned away, leaving her in the middle of the hallway. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Lilly sat curled up in the armchair. Her arm had been freshly bandaged by Wade, a healing cream applied and it didn’t hurt so much. Although it had stung like a bitch at first. She hadn’t bothered getting dressed, they wouldn’t be going on another mission for a while and even if one came up, Stryker would send Victor or Fred and John. They all got equal breaks. She had put socks on but left her legs bare, just letting the hoodie cover her knickers. She hung them over the arm of the chair, watching Logan over the top of her knees as he entered the room. He looked tired, like he hadn’t slept in days, his hair was dishevelled and heavy bags hung under his eyes. He sensed her watching and glanced up, his eyes taking in her bare legs before he looked away, running a hand through his hair. Lilly shifted in the chair, tucking her legs underneath her and sitting crossed legged, resting her chin in her hand. ‘What’s it like there?’ She asked him. He looked at her quizzically. ‘At the school.’ ‘Like a school.’ He replied gruffly. Lilly rolled her eyes. Smartarse. She turned away from him, her eyes landing on her injured arm. She recalled the fight, remembering the way John had looked at her, the way her body had burned when his skin touched hers, literally. She wondered what he was doing now. Probably in some dumb lesson, it had been a long time since she had been to school and she tried to remember what classrooms looked like. She had never stayed in one school for too long, always being kicked out for something or other. She closed her eyes and quietly slipped into a doze.

‘Hunter, wait. I thought we were friends! I thought we could tell each other…’ her voice trailed off because he was gone and he didn’t care. What had she expected him to say back? Congratulations, let’s go find him so you can do it again? Wiping her face hurriedly, Eve glanced around. Maybe Hunter would take over her lesson – someone was bound to see the room was lacking a teacher, but she doubted the students even cared. The only thing to learn today was gossip. That she didn’t want to face. John looked at her as he headed for the classroom and his face showed only disgust. Had she really been so bad? Thoughts that she had helped the night before seemed to vanish and distort. John had done more work than she had, and he was years younger than her – how pathetic Eve.
Eve stayed outside the classroom for five minutes, pressing herself against the wall, thinking. She didn’t want to stay here. Seeing the others come had made her realise there was more to life, even if she was a mutant, to teaching and being trapped inside. She could do what the hell she liked – so why wasn’t she? Bobby stuck his head around the classroom door, obviously having been informed by John that she was outside. Eve liked Bobby, he was a good kid that didn’t deserve the shit he got served. ‘Free period.’ She announced, realising it had been the third lesson that week the kids had been let off or had simply ruined by foolish games. Poor buggers. ‘Can you tell John I want to see him?’ she almost hadn’t said it, ashamed of her outburst only seconds before. But something had just kicked in, and if she was going on, he could come along for the ride, too.

Lilly was abruptly woken as Logan let out a low, feral growl. Sitting bolt upright, she expected the man to be fighting someone or something, but instead he was tossing and turning in his sleep, shredding his pillow. She watched the scene, mouth open. Was he having a nightmare, because then it’d be okay to wake him. Or was he sleep walking, believing the pillow was an intruder. His forehead was dotted with sweat and as she continued to watch, Lilly could see the veins in his neck standing out as the man strained and breathed heavy. Seconds later he sat up, the growl louder, scaring the young girl who screamed in shock and pulled her knees up to her chest in self defence.
'What kind of school gives you nightmares like that.' She whispered.

Lilly carefully scanned the cards in front of her, her eyes narrowing. She stuck her tongue out, humming under her breath. Across from her, in the chair, Logan rolled his eyes and leant back, sighing. Lilly sat crossed legged on the floor, back straight, her fan of cards held up inches from her face. Logan had refused to tell her anything about his nightmare but had also refused to go back to sleep, so Lilly had suggested they play cards. Which was how they had ended up here, at three in the morning. ‘Have you got three hearts?’ She asked finally, smirking at him. He snorted. ‘It’s three of hearts.’ He muttered, shuffling his cards. ‘No, go fish.’ ‘Ugh, I hate this game!’ Lilly threw her cards down in disgust and fell back onto the floor. She heard Logan laugh quietly, picking up the cards and placing them back into the pack. He stood, stretching his back. He had calmed down now and felt comfortable going back to bed - a muttered goodbye was heard and he walked out of the room. Just because she had been nice to him didn’t mean he was going to be suddenly best friends with her, she had hurt his friends, tried to kill the kids, and that didn’t deserve forgiveness. He passed a shirtless Wade in the corridor and avoided the man’s eye, slipping back into his old room. Nothing had changed, nothing had been moved, he dropped down onto his bed, letting his thoughts drift away with him. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ John slunk out of the classroom, arms folded, gaze unforgiving. In that moment Eve realised he has grown in his years, he looked older, maybe even a bit wiser. The bruise around his eye had finally started to fade and he didn’t wince when he talked anymore. Eve wished her bruising could fade as easy. He leant his shoulder in the doorway, raising an eyebrow at her. ‘Yes?’ Eve ringed her hands. ‘Sorry for earlier-,’ she murmured. ‘You’ve said that.’ He interuppted. ‘Look, do you want to help me find Logan or not?’ She snapped, glaring furiously at him. He blinked, obviously shocked, and then he laughed. ‘You want my help now? I thought I was just some kid?’ Outside he was cool, calm, but inside his heart was racing. His fingers itched for his lighter. He was going to see her again - make her hurt. ‘Yeah,’ she nodded, ‘listen, I’ve got an idea to where they might be, we’ll leave tonight. Be ready.'

‘What made you change your mind?’ John asked, unable to help himself. He had expected her to crumble, but really, that fast? And for a moment, Eve didn’t say anything in response and just stared down at the floor, running a hand through her hair slowly. John didn’t think she was going to answer him, and waited impatiently for an answer. It didn’t really matter – it’d just be the satisfaction of hearing that she had made a wrong judgement about him. There was always a good feeling in his gut when someone admitted that he was actually better than they all perceived him to be. In fact, he was pretty fucking amazing and everyone should really know that.
‘Well she’s just a kid too.’
A lump rose in his throat, fingers settling on his lighter. Was she saying they - he and Lilly - were the same as one another, both young and inexperienced and would need to find solace together? Or was this simply a statement that told him she understood, although young, it didn’t mean he couldn’t fight. No matter what age you were, if you were ready, you were ready. And also the fact that he was pretty well adapted to his power, and had saved everyone’s asses. That John didn’t think she would voice. A smirk quivered on his lips. ‘I’m in.’
As he went to his next lesson, swaggering with confidence and delight of his new hidden secret, John slid into a chair besides Rogue and Bobby and took it upon himself to boast as loudly as possible about his feats the nights before. Xavier had warned him to not go around saying such things, because people would probably identify him as a liar, and make up their own stories that John had in fact been asleep through it all, or knocked unconscious. His black eye served as proof, but Bobby was still sceptical. Upon declaring he had wrestled with a girl - change girl to woman, and slender and lean to fat and russian - he had told them the story of what had truly happened, and grinned with malice in saying he was going to fight her again and give her what she deserved. Rogue had rolled her eyes, disgusted, but didn't doubt that hitting a girl was a new low John could reach.
They were just jealous, he kept reminding himself. Jealous of him becoming something, while they sat in the library and dreamt that they could be anywhere near as bad as he was.

Leaning in the doorframe, Wade watched Lilly with a smirk on his face. She was a bit battered and bruised, while he was the only one bounding around without a scrape. Maybe that was why Logan had punctured him several times in the car journey home, just to make sure they all felt some pain. He was still grinning madly, blasé about the way things had gone. ‘All in a days work.’ He announced, watching her jump a litte, her fingers tracing over the pack of cards. ‘Did you clear him out?’ he pointed his thumb down the corridor to where Logan had retreated. ‘He looks like someone ran over his cat.’
‘I don’t think he’s the kind of guy to have a cat.’ Lilly shrugged, only half watching him as he moved into the room and sat opposite her.
‘Yeah.’ Wade shrugged, ‘I suppose he’d just eat it, wouldn’t he?’ his eyes looked over towards the cards and he snatched them away. ‘What was it? Poker? Snap? Strip Snap? I’m good at that.’ His face showed all signs of seriousness and he raised the pack in gesture that they play.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hunter shared a room with Scott, and sometimes it got a bit too close for comfort. He wouldn’t say they weren’t friends, they just had… different opinions. The one thing they did have in common was covering lessons for Eve, and usually this would be the topic of conversation, but tonight Hunter had rolled over and ignored any questions. She had kissed that guy. Eve had kissed Bradley. How did that just happen? One minute they were being attacked, and now suddenly she thought she was in love. Logan had turned himself over, and they wouldn’t be back again so everything would be fine, right? Hunter cared for her, and she was staring to act a little childish, something he didn’t really want. Lately all duties Eve had been given had been passed onto someone else, and he felt himself growing pissed off.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Wade was already topless, and as he’d gotten his second win of the night – two sevens and two fives – he decided it was about time Lilly joined in. ‘Take it off.’ He ordered lazily, waving his cards in her direction. He was smirking, a bottle of beer sat beside him and his feet up on the table. Flexing his muscles, he gave her a wink. ‘Scared you can’t compete with this?’

Lilly grabbed his bottle of beer, downing it in one. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and slowly lifted the edge of her top, pulling it over her head. Wade licked his lips, eyeing the soft supple flesh of her breasts, spilling over the top of the black lace bra. She smirked and leant back on the palms of her hands, the diamond on her belly button glinting in the light. She tilted her head to one side, her hair pulled over one shoulder and brushing her waist, just covering a small tattoo on her hip of a rose, Wade swallowed. ‘Your turn.’ She smirked. He narrowed his eyes and shuffled the cards, slamming half of the pack down in front of her. She laughed, picking them up and still staring at him, she placed it down on the table. He raised his card and put it on top, both of their gazes flickering down to it. Eight of hearts, below it another eight peeked up, surrounded by a heart. What were the chances? ‘Snap!’ She screamed, jumping in her excitement. ‘Goodbye jeans!’ She grinned. Scowling, he undid his belt, sliding the jeans off and throwing them away. Lilly lifted a second card but paused when she caught sight of someone leant in the doorway, watching them. ‘Hey Fred! Why don’t you come play?’ She smiled, patting the seat next to her. Fred blushed. ‘Nah, I got things to do.’ ‘Awh, don’t be boring.’ He sighed and pushed himself off the door frame. ‘Well, okay.’ Lilly squealed in delight as he slumped down onto the sofa. She handed him half of her card pack, leaning back against him. She felt his arm tense as the back of her bra brushed his arm and she smirked. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ‘John!’ Eve hissed, tapping her knuckles on the back of his door. Nothing stirred from within the room and she rolled her eyes. Fucking teenagers and sleeping. ‘John!’ She shouted, banging the door with her fist. It swung open almost immediately and he groaned, rubbing his eye. He was just wearing boxers, a small trickle of hair trailed from his belly button, disappearing underneath them. His stomach was surprisingly hard and Eve was surprised to find he almost had a six pack. She shook her head. ‘Are you ready?’ She snapped. He raised his arms. ‘Do I look ready?’ He replied smartly. ‘Just go get ready. I’ll be outside.’ She left him in his room, hurrying back down the corridor and down the stairs, almost tripping on the last step in her rush. A hand caught her arm and she muttered a thanks and carried on walking - well she tried to. The person swung her back round and she found herself staring up at Hunter. ‘Where are you going?’ He slurred, pushing her back until she was pressed against the wall. She pressed her palm against his chest. ‘Hunter, you’re drunk,’ she whispered, ‘let me go.'

John was still in his room, and for that Eve was momentarily glad. If he came down, Hunter would flip, and in his drunken state she didn’t put throttling a school pupil past him. The fact that she had decided to leave with John and not Hunter would have been the basis of his fury, and then he’d wind off a list of things he thought he could blame her for. Hunter didn’t get drunk often, but when he did, he got drunk bad. His pupils were dilated, and rather than forcing her against the wall, he was leaning against her, unable to stand straight. Forcing him away, Eve sighed as he grabbed her arm, slinging her back against the wall with a hiccup.
‘You’re a mess.’ She sighed, reaching a hand up and brushing it against his face, but Hunter knocked her away with an over exaggerated groan. ‘Go back to bed, Hunter.’
‘Are you going to find him? Hunter asked, obnoxiously loud in the dull silence. ‘How do you plan on doing that, huh?’
‘Go back to bed, Hunter.’ Eve urged, managing to push him away as she shifted the bag on her shoulder. She could hear footsteps padding gently up above them, and Hunter spun around, eyes wild, to see John at the top of the stairs. The man poorly put two and two together and started to laugh rowdily, making five.
‘Oh, I get it.’ He grinned, stroking her face clumsily. ‘You two are a thing now, too, right?’
Eve looked up at John helplessly, who slowly walked down the stairs, finding the whole scene amusing. But Hunter was getting louder, and he didn’t want anyone to ruin his plan.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Both of the men sat tense, staring at their cards determinedly, although their eyes would keep wandering. Lilly was the most dressed out of all of them, and Wade had just lost his socks. Watching the man before her, Lilly gave a small laugh, her eyes shining cheekily. Fred had revealed to all of them a new tattoo he kept on his… well. Somewhere on his person. They’d all laughed and nodded their heads, although who knew what the hell it was supposed to be. Wade slammed down his card, itching to win. Then Fred, then Lilly. Nothing. His breath was fast, excitable and his groin ached. Another round of beers littered the table around the cards, and his head was getting light. Only slightly, but it didn’t take a lot to get Wade going. Especially if there was a semi-naked woman in the room. His eyes raked up her body as Fred placed down another card, then she did, and then it was his turn.
Excitement igniting his eyes as a four landed on top of another four. ‘You gotta get rid of something, sweetie.’ Wade beamed with a wink. Fred suddenly felt hot under the collar and glanced at them both worriedly. 'Uh, guys, I'm gonna go.' was murmured, but the two were too busy locking gazes to even see the man shuffle out awkwardly, a pile of clothes in his arms.

Determined not to lose or falter, Lilly stood up, her eyes locked onto Wade’s as she slid her jeans over her hips and let them drop to the floor. Her knickers matched her bra and Wade’s eyes drank the sight in greedily. She dropped back to the floor, crossing her legs and picking her cards back up. Running a hand through her hair, she placed a card down and grinned, her mind wrapped up in the whole danger of the situation. It had been too long since she had had fun like this and she needed it. Her eyes suddenly lit up and she jumped up, stumbling, before opening the cupboard at the end of the room. Wade’s eyes followed her every movement and when he saw what she held, he grinned. It was vodka, the bottle was halfempty from Wade’s previous drinking ‘games.' The drink was getting to her head and without thinking, she chucked it at him. He caught it easily, though, unscrewing the cap and pouring them each a shot. Skipping back, she accepted it eagerly, knocking it back without a thought. It burned her throat but she ignored it and slumped down next to him, picking up her cards. ‘Your turn.’ She purred. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ John came to stand a couple of inches from Eve. His bag dropped to the ground with a thud, his fingers slipping into his pocket and withdrawing his lighter. Hunter lurched forwards but Eve darted between them. ‘Guys, don’t.’ She said between gritted teeth. This wasn’t how she had imagined. Why did Hunter have to go and ruin everything? He was going to wake people up, people who would stop her going. She glared up at Hunter, who’s own heat filled eyes were locked onto John’s. ‘Don’t you think there’s been enough fighting? This is not the time. Hunter you’re drunk, go to bed.’ Her words seemed to get to him and he looked down at her. ‘Eve,’ he whispered huskily. ‘All I wanted to do was care for you.’ John snorted and looked away. ‘Fucking hell.’ He muttered. He almost expected the man to start crying. Things like this sickened him. There was no room for love in his heart. ‘I know, I know,’ she murmured, ‘but I need to do this. For Logan.’ She hated lying to him but mentioning Bradley would just set him off again. She herself didn’t want to hear it, she didn’t want to think she was doing this for the mysterious gunman. This was for Logan, and no one else. Hunter backed off, shaking his head. ‘Go.’ He said, almost mournfully. John didn’t need telling twice. He picked up his bag, pocketing his lighter, and marching out of the school. He swung his bag into Eve’s Chevrolet, jumping in after it, his knee jittering up and down excitedly. Eve came out a few minutes later, her face hard and determined. He blinked, he had been expecting her to be crying and moping as usual, but it seemed something in her had changed. She shoved his bag out of the way, slamming the key into the ignition. The truck roared to life and neither of them looked back as the wheels spun in the gravel and she skidded out of the gates, changing gear with ferocity and slamming her foot down.

Willie Nelson played on the radio, and John went to switch it off, disgusted at her music taste. Was it country? It was fucking depressing. Eve knocked his hand back, shifting the gears into life as they rounded a corner. The roads were deserted, and the sun wouldn’t be up for a couple of ours. It was almost beautiful. Her window wound down, she smiled at the wind blowing in her face, waking her up, giving her a rush. The mansion had been so stuffy and surprisingly cramped, maybe not in the way it was built, but how the privacy was discarded. When was the last time she’d been out in a car, on the open road, playing music?
It had been when Hunter had taken her to see Xavier. Of course, how could she forget? The same mournful song had played, almost pitying her.
John played with the automatic window, watching it slide up and down at his command. The air came in heavy bursts and hit hard against his face like a vacuum, dirty blonde hair blowing around him. He needed a haircut, but no one had complained. He liked the way girls pulled on it when they kissed him. Even though he was only seventeen, almost eighteen, stubble traced around his jaw. He was trying the look out – after all, he was a new man now. His birthday would be in a couple of months, but even when he did hit eighteen, he wouldn’t be free. When would he ever be free? John didn’t like to be controlled; perhaps that was why he rebelled so ferociously. If only Xavier had given him a longer leash, or not one at all. John wasn’t Bobby or Kitty, he was different. Some rapper came onto the radio, and instead of turning it off, Eve started to sing, voice full of angst and upset.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Wade chinked his shot glass against Lilly’s, both of them downing it simultaneously. After the second or third shot, the stinging was more welcoming than off putting. He gasped grandly, licking out the shot glass. Lilly placed down a card, the pile now on the floor, but suddenly he didn’t want to play anymore. Placing the glass down, Wade rubbed his shoulder against hers, first gently and then roughly. As Lilly spun around to slur insults at him, he found himself grabbing her jaw and pulling her closer. The kiss was fast, almost a test to see if she would comply to go any further. A strong hand slipped onto her thigh, and Wade pulled Lilly easily onto his lap. There was a moment’s hesitation, and she pushed at his chest, but he had growled dominatingly, kissing her neck.
How could she not?
His lips were on her collarbone, hands gripping at her thighs as her body shifted above him, straddling him against the sofa. ‘I think you’re still wearing too much.’ Wade murmured, pulling at the back of her bra, one hand in her hair, yanking her head down when she parted too far. Lips so hungry, his tongue teasing, Wade lifted her up and they backed against the wall and then against the table, blindly stumbling, too busy to even care. Too intoxicated to argue.

With his hands still against her lips, Wade parted her legs, pushing her up onto the table. The table was cold against her bare back and she gasped into his mouth, causing him to groan and climb on top of her. She lifted her self up, letting him fumble with the clasp on her bra until, in frustration, he tore it from her, throwing it to the floor. Her breasts were full and round and he smirked, running his tongue along her collar bone, one hand creeping up her side. She groaned, hips bucking, her hands moving down his strong back and pushing at his boxers. His own hands moved down her sides, hooking under the elastic of her knickers and pushing them down over her legs, where they fell to the floor forgotten. Her arms wound around his shoulders, hands tugging at his hair, demanding attention from his lips. He pulled away from her though, his lips working themselves down to her thighs and he kissed her inner thigh gently, sucking on the flesh. She groaned, her hands burying themselves in his hair. He raised his head to look at her, watching her slender body arch and writhe beneath him. He smirked, slipping his boxers from his hips and hooking his hands under her knees, bringing her legs around him. Neither of them heard the footsteps coming down the hallway, both too lost in what they were doing, the vodka bottle lay discarded on the floor next to the pack of cards. Bradley yawned, rubbing his hand over his face. He had been going to tell them to shut up, people were trying to sleep and they couldn’t do that with all this stupid noise when suddenly he paused, staring at the scene unfolding in front of him. A hot flush crept up the back of his neck and he opened and closed his mouths, trying to explain himself. They hadn’t even noticed him though. ‘I, uh, I didn’t mean to...uhm.’ He stammered for words before he backed away and hurried back down the corridor, slamming the door to his room. His mind was flashing with images, but not of Wade and Lilly, of himself, and that woman. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ‘Do you even know where we’re going?’ John sighed after about an hour. They had left the country long ago and now signs for New York City were flashing on the grass verges. Eve didn’t reply, just pulled the truck onto the interstate and sped up. Of course she knew where they were going, she wasn’t stupid, but neither was Xavier and it had taken her a while to convince Scott to let her into Cerebo. It wasn’t hard to work, you just had to think about who you wanted, and there they were. At first Eve had thought of Logan, but then her mind had drifted and Bradley’s face had appeared in her mind. The stubble on his jaw, the way his dark eyes shone and his mouth upturned into a smirk. She opened her eyes and there he was, staring down at her, walking, fiddling with a gun. The connection wasn’t as good as it was with Xavier, he was much stronger than her, but she learnt enough. They were both with a man called Colonel William Stryker. A Colonel wouldn’t be hard to find, she figured, just ask around. The machine had left her feeling odd though, lightheaded, and sometimes she found herself using her powers without realising. Telling John all this would be a mistake, he relished in weakness, and she had no doubt he would turn on her for any reason. So she kept quiet, turning up the radio.

By the time they reached the large bridge which stretched over the waters to Long Island, the sun was just peeking through the dark navy sky, streaks of pink muddled with orange. The road was still rather empty, but as they stopped and climbed out of the car, John was honked madly by a rushing driver who stuck two fingers out of the window. Swearing back just as angrily, John moved around into the layby with Eve. She was gripping her head gently, but when she felt his eyes on her, straightened up quickly. Silently, Eve moved to the boot and popped it open, pulling a silver case out of the dark depths. John didn’t have to open it to see what it contained, and his fingers reached out excitedly, but he was forced away.
Pulling him aside, Eve had hold of his shirt, and he was getting sick of being forced around. ‘This is for protection, alright? That’s all.’ John pushed her back angrily, eyes dark.
‘If they mess with me, they’ll get what they deserve.’
Some part of her wondered what John was really going to do when he got in there, and the same question swirled around in her mind. Logan. On the way there, when the music was loud, she’d muttered the name under her breath, as if to remind herself not to get distracted. It was too late to turn back now though, and swallowing, she took the gun and tucked it against the small of her back, safety on. In reality all the two sides were doing, was going back and forth, retrieving a person they had no right to take control of. Logan had selfishly offered himself, and now they were going to take him back and start the circle over again. The other half of her wanted to know what the other side was like. Wanted to see what else there was to this small world the mutants had been stamped into. A school? Or would it be a prison? That image had flickered through her mind, blotted out by Bradley’s face. Growling in frustration, they both got back into the car, but John wouldn’t put his gun away. His fingers traced over the cool metal, and he could see himself forcing it against Lilly’s head. Boom.

Wade shook, muffling his moan against Lilly’s collarbone. Biting her neck, his breathing came heavier, her hands gripping his back, nails scratching. And they lay together on the table, tangled up in one another, kissing furiously but more tiredly than before. He kissed her chest softly, tongue trailing over one of her breasts and back to her lips. A content sigh escaped his mouth before he rolled onto his side, shifting Lilly so they could stare at one another. They lay on their sides, looking deep into each other’s eyes, her hand tracing over the muscles in his arm and his jaw. The dreamy smile reached her eyes, hair ruffled like a fluffy mane, lips sore and cheeks red. Reaching out, Wade traced a bruise across her side, expression impassive. John had made that. Jumped up cunt. 'Well played.' he sighed.

The gates around the perimeter were the most daunting thing about the building. It looked daunting, and the sun was struggling to rise above the grey building, almost straining itself to lend them light. The gun felt heavy in her belt and a shaky hand rose to her temple. Trying to keep her breathing calm, Eve’s eyes fluttered shut. Hunter had slipped into her thoughts a couple of times, but she figured he’d fallen asleep on the floor of the kitchen, or else on the sofa. What he thought he’d seen that night he would probably put down as a hallucination. But once they put all the pieces together, they’d be in big trouble. Hopefully by then everything would be over.

The two were on the sofa, wrapped around one another drunkenly. A blanket pulled around them, only Lilly’s legs were visible in the sleeping mass. Wade’s arms wound around her middle, and already fast asleep, he didn’t even move as the woman slipped out from beneath him and clambered into her clothes. She had fallen asleep, if only for a little while. Then the hangover had instantly hit her, along with lack of sleep, and she had decided to find a handful of pills to stop the sick feeling before it started.

John stood next to Eve, his eyes dark as he observed the building. ‘Why the fuck are we just hanging around?’ He sighed. She was in there. Walking around, sleeping, eating, maybe even fucking that prick with the swords. He almost shook in anger. ‘Well how do you suggest we get in, dickhead?’ She snapped. He shrugged almost casually, before raising his hand and sending a blast of fire at the fence. The metal melted almost instantly, the smell of burning reached them and a hole was soon made. Unfortunately, the fire attracted a guard who immediately started running at them, gun raised. Eve lifted her hand and the guy flew, his body giving a sickening crack on the wall he hit. ‘Let’s go.’ She murmured. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Lilly downed the pills and then paused, swallowing thickly and walking to the window. She had heard a noise, a strange cracking and she jumped up onto the windowsill, peering out. Slumped below it was a body and she recognised the smooth face of the new trainee guard. Her eyes snapped up, scanning the perimeter, but there was nothing, just the gentle lapping of the river against the shore. ‘Shit.’ She muttered, jumping down and rushing out of the kitchen. ‘Wade.’ She shouted, throwing a pillow at his head. ‘Get your fat ass out of bed.’ He groaned. ‘I’m not fat!’ He clutched his head and sat up, glaring at her. ‘What?’ ‘I think there’s someone here. That guard dude is dead.’ She snorted. Why did Stryker think they needed a guard.

Fred was outside, trying to cool down, a mars bar half-eaten in his hand. The fact that it wasn’t even morning yet didn’t deter him from standing outside in the fresh air. Time didn’t really mean fuck all when you were here, because something was always happening, and it was almost always something bad. Finishing the chocolate, he pulled another one out of his pocket and hungrily ripped open the rapper. From the corner of his eye he saw a gust of smoke flare in the sky, followed by a massive explosion, the ash carrying on the wind. John hadn’t been as calm as he had promised he had been, and after seeing Eve shoot the guard dead, he’d decided to have a little more fun. ‘Fred, it seems we have some unwanted guests. Sort them out, will you?’ Stryker’s voice came onto the intercoms and the man nodded, chucking the wrapped down but not before finishing the food. You should never waste chocolate. A machine gun rested on his shoulders, and with a grin, he started off through the yard in search of the intruders.

Wade was still half asleep when he yanked on his jeans. Wobbling, he kicked the vodka bottle across the floor where it skidded to a halt by Bradley’s ankle. The man wouldn’t meet Wade’s eye and looked about as good as Wade felt. Shit. Lilly was suddenly wide awake, but her head kept thumping unkindly and her mouth was too dry. Pulling on a hoodie, the three of them set off down the corridor. Lights were flashing amber all around the building, a warning to get to work. Logan was up and out of his room before Lilly had even gotten to him. They were to protect him, but the look on the gruff mans face showed he wanted otherwise.

Eve stuck to the shadows of the building, glad John had decided to split up, she was getting fed up of him fucking things up. She could easily have got them in without the big fire show and without making a noise. She shook her head, sighing, her sigh sticking in her throat when she caught sight of what must have been the biggest man she had ever seen. His muscles bluged from beneath the tight top he wore, a machine gun slung over one shoulder. She ducked back down into the shadows, pressing herself against the wall, her heart in her mouth. She peered back round and frowned. He had disappeared. She turned back round, preparing to go the other way, there was no way she was going to take chances with that guy. A gun clicked and she found herself staring straight down the barrel. The man smiled. ‘Gotcha.’ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Lilly had also split up from Wade and Bradley, although it wasn’t intentional. They all had designated areas to protect, so they weren’t caught off guard. It was a good idea actually and it was the only thing Lilly particularly liked about the man. She rounded a corner, bored and tired, wishing she hadn’t told anyone about the dead guard. Who cares if some dumb kids had tried to act tough? That didn’t need all of them to take care of. She rolled her eyes and rounded a corner, stopping dead. ‘Miss me?’ John grinned, a fireball already in his palm. For a minute Lilly actually panicked, and then she rolled her eyes. ‘What the fuck are you doing here?’ She snapped. ‘You’re just going to get yourself hurt again.’ ‘If your little friends hadn’t turned up, you would have been dead.’ He snarled, sauntering closer. He smirked when she backed up slightly and she scowled, forcing herself to stand still.

Eve’s breath caught in her throat as her face met the barrel of the gun. Fred gave a chuckle as she raised her hands cautiously. ‘You’re a big one, aren’t you?’ she murmured, deciding it wouldn’t be the best idea to try and take him. It would take too much concentration and stamina to simply focus on the guy, before she could even lift his bulk and slam him across the yard. The gun alone must weigh around seventy-pounds. ‘Easy, Fella.’ Fred had jabbed the gun at her, his nostrils flaring. Had she just insulted him?
‘Are you saying I’m fat?’
She almost hadn’t believed him, and her expression dropped, nonplussed. What was he, a woman or a fifty-pound hulk of man? Fred probed her for an answer, breathing heavy and as Eve slowly backed away, hands out, she seriously thought she stood no chance. The blonde took flight, racing around the corner just as Fred fired his gun, tearing a hole in the side of a steel tanker. The gun pressed against her back felt small and insignificant, and probably more of a tasty snack than a warning to that man. His feet were heavy behind her, and then suddenly they dropped. But her feet carried her onwards, panting, eyes darting around for anyone, anything. The explosions had subsided in the distance and she half thought John had been captured – just her fucking luck. Silent, the place seemed more threatening than ever before. Her precious car was parked about a mile away, and as she thought about it Eve felt the pressure bubble up in her throat as the realisation hit her; this wasn’t going to work. What had she been thinking?
The wind was knocked out of her as she rounded the corner and crashed into something. It wasn’t that tank of a man, because she’d have been flat on her back by now – it was Bradley. Seeing him, before she had arrived there, Eve would have stopped and possibly thrown herself at him, but she straightened herself up and continued to dart into the distance. She felt like a rat in the maze, but at each exit she doubted there was a juicy block of cheese, and instead a nasty, broad-shouldered man with a shiny gun.

‘Scared?’ John laughed, edging closer and filling the gap between them as Lilly decided to stand her ground. So she was going to play tough, was she? ‘I can take you again. I can make you hurt.’ He gripped the gun from his belt and held it down by his side, rotating it around in his hand as if showing it off. ‘I’ve got a new toy, too. I wouldn’t think of taking this one, if I were you.’
Lilly stared at him, eyes dark and angry. Did he really think she was going to buy this tough guy act? ‘Well, you’re not me, because if you were, you’d have a better gun.’ She pulled the shotgun off her shoulder and aimed it straight against his chest. Was that a flinch? She laughed at him, shaking her head. ‘I told you, you were playing with people out of your league. See your eye hasn’t healed yet – don’t make me damage the rest of your face-.’
‘Enough with the talking.’ His hand reached out, and Lilly watched him, unsure what his next movement would be. Strangely he just dropped it back down by his side, a sigh escaping his lips as he heard footsteps. Had he been about to touch her? The steps faded behind him, followed by heavy breathing, but he wouldn’t turn around and let her have the upper hand. ‘You got friends?’ he asked, and Lilly nodded smugly.
‘Lots of big friends with big guns.’
‘You’re very hostile. Probably the only girl that’s ever denied me anything.’
Lilly laughed again, shaking her head at how incredibly full of himself this boy was. ‘I’m sure that’s not true.’ She snorted, watching his feet as he took another step forward.
Wade watched the wholes scene unfold, his arms crossed over his chest. He could see everything from here, sat up on of the old abandoned lorries. His boots dangled over the edge, but he stopped swinging his legs when he caught sight of Lilly. He waited for her to beat that scrawny kids ass and excitement surfaced, before the jealously hit. He hadn’t thought of being jealous, especially not of a little runt like that. The boy raised a hand to Lilly’s face, and that was when Wade grinned. He was going to lose that hand in a minute. But nothing. Dust flew against the side of the lorry as a body flung itself down the path, heading straight for Wade. He didn’t know where Logan was, but as long as he was inside, he didn’t really give a fuck – though, if he did surface, maybe the fun could really start. Torn between the blonde and the brunette, Wade didn’t move for a moment before deciding that he wasn’t going to drop at Lilly’s feet. They could all handle themselves around here. ‘Blonde it is then.’ He murmured, jumping down, but she’d vanished.
