An arm had grabbed Eve around her waist, one hand clamped over her mouth. She struggled as she was dragged back into darkness, every instinct in her telling her to run, to get away and she screamed into the hand, her jaw working as she tried to bite it. Her arms flailed and hit him on the side of his head and he grunted, spinning them both round and throwing her onto the floor. She immediately scrambled up and made for...for where? She had no idea where she was, it was dark outside, but now it was dark inside, so she made for the slither of light escaping somewhere ahead. She tried to dart around the shadowy figure in front of her but a hand caught her arm and she was pushed back against the wall. Her eyes had adjusted slightly now and she watched as he raised his finger to his lips, shaking his head slightly. She tried to nod in response but found she was frozen, her hands splayed against the tin wall. Outside she could hear footsteps coming dangerously close to where they were and her heart was thumping so loud she was certain it would give them away. ‘Hey, Zero!’ A voice she recognised as Wade shouted. ‘You seen that woman anywhere? I swear she was here.’ Zero must have said replied because soon the footsteps faded away and Eve could breathe again. She sank to the ground, watching as black boots walked into view and her saviour stood over her. For a split second she thought it had been Logan but then she looked up. ‘Why did you help me?’ She whispered. ‘What are you doing here?’ Bradley asked, avoiding her question. He didn’t sit down, just stood looking down at her. ‘I came to get Logan.’ She answered, struggling to her feet. He reached out to help her but she flinched away. As she stood there in the discarded shipping container with Bradley, she suddenly realised just what a stupid woman she had been. He wasn’t going to suddenly jump into her arms as she’d imagined, or take her to live a new life with him. He wasn’t trained to think that way, he was too attached to his job - or maybe he was just as scared as she was. He grabbed her arm and this time she didn’t move away. A shiver ran down her spine as his fingers curled around her upper arm. ‘You have to leave.’ He muttered. ‘They’ll kill you as easily as I found you.’ She didn’t protest as he lead her to the door and pushed it open, peering out. The yard was empty, the sound of voices drifted from at least a hundred metres down the island and Bradley pulled her out. ‘Go.’ ‘Why did you kiss me?’ She spun, hair whipping her cheeks, eyes glaring. He looked taken aback by her question and shifted uneasily. ‘I wanted to.’ He finally said. ‘Well, you can’t just do things because ‘you want to’,’ she snapped, ‘and I’m not going, I’m going to find Logan.’ _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ John was taller than Lilly, despite being a year younger. He didn’t act his age though, he seemed more like one of them than anything and Lilly decided she better get rid of him fast before Stryker founded him and invited him into their little gang. She lifted the shotgun, letting the muzzle rest underneath his chin and her eyes narrowed. ‘You come any closer and I’ll pull the trigger.’ She warned him. He smirked and raised his hand, pushing the barrel away. Lilly wasn’t sure why she was letting him do this, they both knew she could of just punched him and run, or even shot him and be done with it, but something about him was making her feel something she hadn’t in a long time - worried. His hand slipped to her waist and she stiffened, immediately pulling away earning a chuckle from the boy. ‘I’m going to fuck you and then blow your fucking brains out.’ He whispered, leaning his head against hers. ‘So you gonna show me to your room, or do you want me to do you against this wall?'

She’d cut the side of her palm open as they’d skidded on the floor, and moving away, she wiped it hastily on the back of her jeans. Bradley after her for a few steps, but Eve turned, pointing the gun between his eyes, sneering. ‘You don’t follow me anymore.’ Her eyes flashed warningly and he stopped, but not before shifting he walky-talky in his back pocket and holding down one of the buttons. As she stalked off into the dark, Bradley raised it to his lips as it crackled.
‘Zero, I’ve got the girl down the left side of the yard, she’s just about to pass one of the search lights, it’ll flash orange and shadow her movements – find it and you’ll find her.’ he could give away her position, but Bradley wouldn’t be the one to take her in. He felt like he’d betrayed her, but what choice had she left him? The way the gun hovered level between his eyes, her hand unshaking, he had known she wouldn’t stop. Glancing down at his hand, he closed his palm with a wince where Eve had bitten him. This was fucking stupid.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
His hand found her face, and John pushed her head back, thumb hard against her cheekbone. He smoothed a circle on her skin before tugging her forward. Her body was still stiff beneath him. Forcing his lips against hers, he moaned frustrated as her hands sought his chest and gripped at his t-shirt, trying to shove him away. Lilly wasn’t sure if she wanted him to be on her or dead on the ground, and kept clenching her fist against his chest, feeling the muscles beneath. His tongue found entrance, and he could taste the alcohol on her breath but somehow it was appealing and he grinned against her lips when she returned with the same heat. A strip light passed over them and he forced the both of them into the shadows, grunting as her back hit against something and their foreheads bumped.
'Which ways your room?'
Reaching behind him, John clamped hold of the shotgun but Lilly gripped his wrist and pushed him away. ‘I don’t trust you.’ She breathed, their bodies pressed so tightly against one another that their shadows moulded into one. ‘I keep mine, you keep yours.’ Her own fingers slipped onto the pathetic gun resting in the side of his belt, and John grinned, putting his legs either side of her, trapping her small body against the wall.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
‘That cunt sent me the wrong bloody way.’ Wade was striding down a darkened walkway, but his pace had slowed and then stopped completely. There was nothing this end, and he was starting to think the man had sent him the wrong way on purpose. Leaning back against the wire fence, he gave an exaggerated yawn and scanned the area, although he could barely see very far ahead anyway. Something shifted in the shadows behind him, and had that been a growl? ‘Has Victor come to play?’ Wade chuckled, but was greeted by silence. Something out of the corner of his eye moved again, sliding across the walls like a predator.… ‘Lilly.’
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Eve had managed to settle her breathing slightly as she pressed herself against the outer fence, her fingers gripping into the gaps for control. She was going around in circles, and would no doubt end up getting lost out here again. Her hand stung, but putting everything to the back of her mind, adrenaline kicked in and she shot across the darkness, only to be captured by a flash of light. Something above her caught her gaze and she blinked, dazed and blinded. ‘Shit.’ Racing out of the light, she found it now on her heels, stalking her like an animal.

Lilly let his lips move down the side of her neck, brushing her hair out of the way, and his tongue slipping onto her collar bone. She ignored the feelings stirring inside her and out of the darkness, she led the shadows. They came creeping along the wall, rolling and pushing, as if they had lives of their own. Lilly let them slip down the wall, her hand moving to John’s belt, he didn’t even notice as the shadows slipped up his legs and then suddenly they had his wrists and he was yanked back. Lilly straightened up, grinning, and spun her shotgun round. He was struggling, furious he had been overcome again, his lighter flicked open and the shadows withdrew slightly, burning away. ‘Bang.’ Lilly whispered and then she lifted the gun and hit him in the side of his head, smirking as his body slumped to the floor. She tilted her head to the side, observing his face. With a content sigh, she adjusted her hoodie from where it had slipped and she pulled the hood up, hair falling over her shoulders. She bent down and grabbed his leg, only to be grabbed from behind and spun round. ‘You took your time taking him out.’ Wade murmured. His tone was playful but his eyes were dark. Lilly shrugged him away. ‘So? Help me with him.’ She grabbed John’s wrist, standing pathetically by his unconcious body. Wade narrowed his eyes. ‘Carry him yourself.’ ‘Wade!’ She rolled her eyes. ‘Stop being a dick and carry him!’ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Zero moved around the corner of the building like a panther, guns at his side and face furious. He should be in bed, he was in bed, having a lovely dream about a pretty redhead and now some dumb kids had come and decided to play tough. Well he had had enough. He was going to tear this girl apart and chuck her in one of their cells, leaving her there to rot. He could hear her heavy breathing as she ran from then light, her feet hitting the ground with every step. They always ran, he noted, as if they could outrun a bullet, as if they would actually get somewhere. She rounded the corner at breakneck speed, almost not spotting him, almost. She skidded to a halt, the gun raising shakily as she backed away. He lifted his own guns, waving them in the air. ‘I win.’ He whispered. She whimpered and turned, but suddenly Victor was there. Zero’s head jerked back, where the fuck had that beast come from? He shrugged in answer to his own question, either way, the girl was in trouble now. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Eve moaned in terror and frustration. She went to point the gun at this second man but what good would it to? He looked like the kind of man you feared that was under your bed when you were a child. He snarled down at her and before she knew what was happening his hand was round her throat, lifting her off the ground. Her own hands wrapped around his thick wrist, legs kicking out. Nails were digging into her flesh, unusually sharp nails and she felt the warm sensation of blood seeping down onto her collar bone. She stared into his eyes and decided he was the scariest man she had had the misfortune of meeting. ‘Time to stop playing around.’ He snarled.

John couldn’t seem to remember anything as he stirred on the floor, a shooting pain down one side of his head, dried blood sticking to his chin. Pushing his hair back from his face, he moaned as some stuck to the wound and tore it open. It was unusually cold, wherever he was, and as he rolled onto his back and stared upwards, he honestly had no idea. Never had he seen a place like this, only imagined when he thought of the horrible things he could do some unfortunate kid at school. A prison? Had they been arrested? But the air was silent and still and he couldn’t hear feet or a typewriter, a computer buzzing, a coffee maker whirring. A hand ran down his side, and he found it to be his own. The fuzzy lining around everything slowly focused and he grabbed at his chest, and then down for his gun. A light flickered ominously above him, hanging on a chain. He didn’t fancy being dropped into darkness again, but then maybe if he was, at least the shadows couldn’t get him.
‘That bitch.’ He hissed, jumping as a voice came from behind him.
‘Do you mean me?’ Lilly was smiling at him, her face upside down. Shifting into a sitting position, John put a hand to his head and glared at her from under his floppy fringe.
‘Think you’re smart?’ John asked, wiping the blood from his face with his sleeve. Hearing the well-known growl of Logan, he craned his neck around, watching the man storm down the aisle between the cages, his claws extended. A brunette walked quickly behind her, long hair blowing over her shoulder, her stomach revealed beneath a small tank top. This, John liked. Looking up at her, mouth open, he smirked up at her when she winked back.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Eve lashed out at Bradley, but the chain yanked her back and she arched, her back hitting against the bars behind her. One hand was clamped with a handcuff, then attached to her cell. Her neck was sore, and when she’d been brought back and unceremoniously chucked down on the floor, she’d lay, panting and grabbing at the cuts. Bradley had stared down at her, almost pityingly. Almost in an I-told-you-so manner, and she hated it. Lunging again, her wrist clicked unkindly and Eve spun around, defeated. ‘Why do this?’ she growled, her hair hanging over her face which she hastily brushed away. The handcuffs rattled. ‘What do you think I’m gonna do?’
Wade had clipped on the handcuff after they’d brought her down into the cells and she had swung out, punching him hard in the face. Something Hunter had taught her, in a form of self-defence from home lesson.

Lilly turned, eyes looking the woman up and down. ‘Who the fuck are you?’ She snapped. ‘Charming.’ Was all the woman replied, standing beside Logan as he stood in front of John’s cell. Lilly moved to stand in front of him, glaring up at him, pushing him back with the barrel of the shotgun. ‘Why is he in a cell?’ He growled. ‘What have you done to him?’ He grabbed Lilly around her neck, slamming her against the bars of the cell, her back cracking. ‘He’s just a kid.’ The woman lay a hand on his shoulder and he snarled under his breath, dropping Lilly. ‘Where’s Eve?’ Lilly coughed, smirking. ‘We killed her.’ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Wade stood across from Eve, eyes narrowed, nursing his jaw. Bitch had a strong right hook, he’d give her that. Although, she wouldn’t be fighting once Stryker was done with her. He smirked, brightening up at the thought. Soon all this would be over and they would be allowed to return to their beds. His mind drifted to Lilly but he didn’t let it go too far, he wasn’t sure about the girl. She was fun, sure, but she never let on what she was feeling, thinking, and he was used to girls falling at his feet. Plus, she was small. The new girl, however, he smiled, judging by the way she walked around half naked, she wouldn’t be bothered by a few dirty comments. Comments which Wade was going to make sure he gave her, who knew, maybe it would lead to something more. He glanced at Eve, now she was just mental. ‘Let me go!’ She cried, the metal digging into her wrist so much it almost bled. ‘Eve, I think it would be beneficial for all of us if you quietened down.’ A voice drifted from down the hall and Wade noted how all the other kids, ones who had been there a while, shrunk back into their cells. Stryker came to a stop in front of the cell, smiling. ‘How are you doing?’ Eve glared. ‘Who’re you?’ ‘My name is William Stryker and I’m afraid you made a big mistake trying to break into this facility.’ His voice held a deadly, icy undertone, with promises of what would happen to her if she did not cooperate. ‘Now, you have two choices. You can either be killed, painlessly, and your body will be shipped back to wherever you came from - Xavier’s I presume.’ Bradley nodded, stiffening. ‘Or you can join my team. Of course, all of the members are highly trained individuals with interesting powers, I do not let just anyone in and it is a privilege in itself to be asked to be tested.’ ‘Tested?’ Eve narrowed her eyes. Stryker nodded. ‘Yes. You will be put through a series of tests, each harder than the other. Fail even one, and you will be killed there and then. Do you understand?’ Eve snorted. ‘If you think I’m working for you, you’ve got another think coming.’ One side of Stryker’s lips curled upwards. ‘Option one it is then.'

‘You’re sick!’ Eve yelled, jabbing a finger at him, but backing up, pacing. ‘We never did any of this to your people when they were on our territory. We never hurt them, unless they hurt us.’
‘Maybe because your team doesn’t have the guts-.’ Wade tried, leaning against one of the cells.
‘Because we have a conscience!’ she snarled, staring at Bradley who looked away. Stryker didn’t seem deterred at all, he’d heard everything before. Everyone had a sob story here, all differing, but each earning nothing but a cold shoulder. Why should he care? They all deserved what they got, for what they did to this world. ‘I don’t need my hands to hurt you.’ She warned, voice shrinking, enveloped with a shocking cough. Victor had seriously hurt her, and Eve couldn’t help wondering how any human could ever do anything like that. Were these people here even human, or just inhumane?
'Decided to change your mind?' Stryker asked calmly, but Eve's eyes flared up at him, hazed over.
'You let John go, he's just a child!' She didn’t care if the kid could hear her, hadn’t he got himself caught too? They were no better than one another, only she wasn’t going to admit she had failed. She needed to protect him, send him back. John was heard yelling something, but Eve refused to break eye contact with Stryker, and he was finding it hard to stop too. 'You leave him alone, and you don't touch him - or I swear! You better send him back, you've no idea what I can do.'
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
‘Darling, you’re a terrible liar.’ Kate purred, smirking. ‘She’s down the other end with Stryker. You stay with your little friend.’ She knocked her head to indicate John. ‘He’ll make a good play pal for you.’ As the woman walked off with Logan, Lilly stared at her back furious. John wasn’t sure if he should laugh or yell something insulting, but he kept quiet, standing up gingerly. What was with all the woman pretending they were just as hard as they men? Well, maybe they were. His hand found the side of his head again and he winced.
‘I’m still keeping to my word.’ He told her, moving closer to the bar so his breath was on her cheek. Lilly swung around and John took a slight step back. ‘I’m gonna fuck you, and shoot you with your own gun. I’m gonna make you wish you never touched me.’

‘And you have no idea what I can do.’ Stryker sighed. He was getting frustrated. He had things to do, places to be, and this was just another tedious thing to interuppt his night. He could feel the men around him getting pissed too, they had just come back from a mission, and they were used to sleeping for at least a day to recuperate. This girl had messed everything up. ‘Decide now, or you both die.’ ‘Stryker!’ Logan didn’t wait for the man to turn, he grabbed him by his collar, slamming him up against the wall. ‘You leave them alone - let them go, or so help me I’ll kill you all.’ ‘Good luck with that.’ Wade commented. The woman sighed. ‘What is it with all you men? Why do you have to fight all the time.’ She crossed her arms over her chest, raising one finely plucked eyebrow. ‘Logan, let him go, honestly.’ To everyone’s surprise, Logan heeded her words and back away from Stryker. Wade’s eyes lit up. ‘What’s your name, sweetcheeks?’ He grinned. ‘Kate.’ She answered smoothly. ‘And you must be Wade, yes, I’ve heard things about you.’ ‘All good, I hope.’ He winked. ‘I’ll do it.’ Eve moaned and all eyes turned to her. Inside, she was telling herself it was because if she didn’t, John would also die, and that was half the reason. The other half, the one that told her to never give up, was once she passed these ‘tests’ she would easily be able to go, and she was determined to take Logan with her. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Lilly sat crossed legged opposite the bars. Her mind on the woman, Kate. Who did she think she was? Coming in here, wearing a stupid top like it was the middle of summer. She pulled her hoodie around her, suddenly feeling threatened. She didn’t want to be friends with Kate, hell, she didn’t want to be friends with anyone. The last time she had had a friend she had accidentally killed the girl and since then she had given up. Her eyes flickered up to look at John. He was leaning against the wall of his cell, legs up and elbows resting on his knees. ‘What is your problem?’ She suddenly asked, one ear listening for anything further down the aisle. She could just see Wade, smiling at Kate, and she frowned, glancing down. John looked up. ‘What?’ ‘What is your problem?’ Lilly repeated. ‘With me.’ He looked at her blankly and then one shoulder lifted and dropped. ‘I don’t like you.’ He said flatly. She scowled. ‘Well I don’t like you either.’ The conversation was childish but she didn’t care. ‘I’m going, don’t hurt yourself.’ She stood and without waiting for answer, walked off upstairs for something to eat.

'I know you.' Kate purred, looking down at Eve who was nursing her wrist, hissing, agitated. 'You were wanted for killing your old man.' Eve didn't say anything, just shifted slightly, trying to angle the cuff away from her seeping cut.
'And I don't know you so I'd be very grateful if you pissed off.' Wade had apparently lost the key to the handcuffs and Stryker had threatened to just leave her. She'd swung out again, but Logan calmed her down. He was in the cell too now, and raising a claw he sliced it through the metal, barely inches from her skin. The cuff served as a bracelet now and Eve told him she wouldn't risk him trying to take it off because she needed that hand.
'Wanking hand?' Wade offered.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
John looked up as Kate moved towards him, a key dangling in her hand. She watched him for a moment as if debating something. 'Sixteen?' She asked, earning a Seoul. 'Eighteen.' He muttered, figuring being a few months out wouldn't hurt anybody.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Lilly sat in the kitchen, feet up on the table, eating an apple she had found. She watched as Kate sauntered in, her hips swaying, she sat down in the chair opposite her and gave the younger girl a smile. Lilly glared. Ignoring her, Kate picked up a newspaper, flicking it open with one hand. ‘They let that girl out,’ she commented, breaking the silence. ‘They’ll probably let the boy out too.’
‘What’s your point?’
Kate rose her eyebrows. ‘I was just making conversation.’
Lilly shook her head, looking away, and then she looked back, smirking. ‘Did your daddy buy you that ring?’ She mocked.
‘What’s that supposed to mean?’ Kate closed the newspaper carefully, tapping her manicured nails on the surface of the table.
‘It means, you talk like you come from the richest fuckin’ family in the ‘neighbourhood’,’ she shook her head, leaning back in the chair and staring at the clock.
Kate decided there and then that this girl and herself would not get on. ‘As a matter of fact, this ring is one of many when I walked through the wall of a bank and took it.’ She smiled at the diamond. ‘And I would rather not talk like a scruffy little teenager, thank you very much.’
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Eve walked up the steps slowly, fully aware of the reassuring hand of Logan on her shoulder. She shrugged it off though. If she was going to be staying here, she didn’t want to walk in the scared, vulnerable woman. She was going to be strong, and there was no way she was going to take a single piece of shit from anyone.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
'Scruffy? It's called doing hard work, darling.' She snarled, using the womans word against her, mocking. 'Something I doubt you've ever done. What the hell are you doing here? You seriously don't think you're gonna last, do you? Those nails will be chipped in a day.'
Kate stared at Lilly, eyes narrowed, and then she laughed. 'I get it.' She smiled, and the smile knocked Lilly down, confused. 'Just because I've got what you want.'
Lilly paused, knowing fully well she was being bated. 'Which is what?' She asked finally, taking a bite from her apple and trying to keep herself calm.
'Honey, I've got the looks, the brains, and I'm everything your little man out there has been dreaming of.' She pushed away from the worktop. 'In fact, I think I'll go see him now. Get to know him a little better. I'd eat another one of those if I were you - you're looking a bit on the... Round side.'
Lilly was round the table in a second, lunging at the woman. But Kate seemed to know she was coming and spun, slamming her fist into her jaw and sending the girl straight into the door. She stumbled, her own fist swinging, catching the woman in her stomach. Kate grabbed her neck and swung her round and Lilly’s flailing arm caught a pot full of cooking utensils, sending them crashing to the floor. Shrieking, Lilly grabbed the first thing she could get a hold of, a metal spatula, and hitting Kate on the side of her head. To her surprise, she backed away, but she soon realised why when she lifted her foot and sent it into her stomach. Lilly’s breath was knocked out of her and she dropped the floor, coughing, a slither of blood bubbling over her lips.
‘And it would seem,’ Kate smiled, ‘a better fighter.’
Wade rushed into the kitchen, Eve close behind him. ‘What the fuck happened her?’ He said in surprise, his eyes flickering over Lilly before turning to Kate. ‘A fight? And I missed it? Damn.’ He looked Kate over appreciatively.
‘I think your friend is hurt.’ Eve muttered, moving around the side of the table awkwardly, her eyes taking in the kitchen and the lounge – magazines strewn everywhere. Vodka and beer bottles, a pack of cards and a flatscreen television, beside it a shelf of DVD’s. Why did everything look so…normal? Her eyes moved back to the scene, watching as Lilly coughed on the floor, blood splattering onto the red tiles. So these people really were human. Her hand was moving, fingers splaying, and a shadow jumped up at Kate, wrapping round her neck.
‘What the-,’ the woman didn’t have chance to say anymore before the black tendril tightened and her fingers flew up as she tried to tug it away, choking.
‘Lilly, stop it.’ Wade warned. His voice was scarily serious now and he grabbed the gun from his belt, holding to Lilly’s head. The girl’s eyes flickered from the dark black they had become and she looked away, letting shadows dissolve into the air. She spat blood at Wade, smirking as it splattered the hand he was holding the gun with.
Eve wasn't sure what had just happened, and she let herself slide against the wall for stability. It didn't take a lot to get this lot worked up, did it? She'd hate to see what happened when they fought over the remote. But Kates eyes were wide, angered the girl had managed to retaliate. Her eyes flickered towards Wade, wondering if he was worth it. She could always get someone else - maybe Logan, but not that Bradley. He seemed too sickly sweet for his own good. Raising a hand to her throat, she rubbed it cautiously and indicated towards Eves own injuries. 'Reminds me to wear a scarf from now on. Seems you all like to go for the jugular - what are you, dogs?' With that, the woman left and Wade couldn't help but watch her hips swish away. 'Well I know atleast one of you are.' was heard added maliciously and Lilly had to physically stop herself from chasing after her again.
'Was that over me?' Wade smirked, placing the sticky gun on the side and wiping the blood on the bottom of his shirt. Lilly glowered at him.
'Don't flatter yourself, pig.' She sighed, running her sleeve over her lips and coughing pathetically. So three new people had been added to play happy families? They'd soon drop out - she'd make sure of it. This wasn't a hotel or a half-way house; this was the real thing. And she had caught John out twice. Didn't that say something? They weren't good enough to belong here. She could feel Eve's eyes on her and glared angrily. Lilly felt almost pity in the womans gaze.
'What are you looking at?'
'Don't start with me!' The woman snapped, voice shrill. She didn't want to fight anymore, everything had become so messy so easily, but everything was angering her and it was hard to control.
'Round two?' Wade grinned excitedly, but both stared at him with such a look of annoyance that he raised his hands and backed away. 'If the shows over, I suppose I can get back to sleep now?'
'Yeah, fuck off.' Lilly snapped. 'Go play with your new friend.'
'So it was about me.' Wade chuckled, suddenly pleased with himself. He walked out of the kitchen, probably back to his bed.
Eve shifted uneasily. She thought about going to find John then decided against it. Obviously he didn't want her around, he could take care of himself now. 'Where do I sleep?' She asked the other girl.
Lilly shrugged. 'Wherever the fuck you like.' She glanced at Eve waiting for some smartass remark, but she was just looking down at her feet oddly. She sighed. 'Out of here, turn right, there's a corridor. They're all bedrooms. Some are empty, most of them at the end, I think. Don't go next to Fred - he snores like a chainsaw.' She nodded as if to confirm what she had just said.
'Thanks.' Eve replied, heading out of the kitchen. She paused in the doorway and turned back. 'You can try and kill that Kate all you like, just, leave me alone though, okay?' She didn't wait for an answer and walked away in search of a bed.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Bradley leant against the wall beside Zero, watching the tests take place. Zero had insisted on coming as they were using his firing range. Bradley had been bored and not wanting to sit in the lounge all day and listen to the rest of them bicker over pointless shit, he had come along. Stryker was informing the pair of what they had to do, Victor stood behind him, arms behind his back, eyeing the two. He was there for precaution, incase something went wrong, or they decided they didn't want to be part of the team anymore and went 'AWOL'. Targets had been set up at the end of the room and Stryker moved to the side. Immediately John raised his hand, lighter in his palm, and he almost lazily burned each of them easily. He smirked and then turned to Eve.
'What kind of shit is this?' He muttered, sighing. This was the kind of stuff they did at Xavier's, he had been expecting something a bit more...badass.
Zero smiled and Bradley guessed he was remembering there own texts. The first day was easy and most of them had been confused as to why they were doing it. After all, they had all come from broken homes, the army, all of them had experience in fighting and could have done what Stryker asked in a day. But Bradley knew, either tomorrow or tonight, they would be taken out and made to kill someone. Most of the time it would be a child, after all, if you killed a child what couldn't you do?
Stryker turned to Eve who stared back defiantly. This was pointless and she wanted to revolt, but the group of men besides her made he choose to do otherwise. 'What do you want me to do?' She murmured, hands stuffed into the pockets of a hoodie she'd found on the end of her bed that morning. It seemed the norm around here to wear oversized hoodies with emblems stitched out. It was like being at a boot camp.
The man indicated towards the targets and she shrugged her shoulders pathetically. 'I'm not going to kill anyone.' Eve said simply, staring at a gun on the side table. It was like sports day and she had been the kid made to substitute in the mile long race. She wasn't prepared, she didn't want to and she didn't give a shit, but the sullen expression never passed her face, and instead Eve looked bored.
'Then how do you intend to win?' Stryker questioned lazily, noticing how the girls eyes had become distracted by John's lighter. They were all stubborn in the beginning, before they learnt that they had to fight to make it anywhere.
'There's nothing to win and you don't look like a man that rewards.'
Victor stiffened, emitting a low warning growl. He was bored of all her shit - maybe he should have taken her head off after all. Then he heard a gunshot and looked up, confused. Keen hearing made him sense it before the others, although Bradley's eyes had never left her. Three shots punctured the temple of the cut-out, two in the chest and one at the heart. The blonde slung the gun down angrily, annoyed she'd been made to do what she had never wanted to do. That could have been a person, a kid, a mutant. Wearing a gun and holding it for show was completey different to being forced to use it on someone so vulnerable.
'I'm not a murderer. Don't make me do that again.'
Stryker allowed a small smile to grace his face as he observed the bullet holes. She was a good shot, although he doubted she had used a gun in her life, not even against her dad. No, that had been her mind. 'What can you do with your power?' He asked simply.
She shrugged half-heartedly. 'I'm not sure.' She said quietly. 'I can move things, put up shields, kill-,' she stopped. Saying that would have been a lie. She doubted she could do again, what she did that night, even if she tried. It was in her though, Stryker knew that too, all he had to do was harness it.
He nodded. 'Okay, go have lunch, return here in two hours.' He nodded at the two men watching and that was there cue to leave as well.

Lilly ignored the smooth voices coming from Wade's room. Either he had got himself some high-class prostitutes or that rich bitch was in there. She didn't care either way, told herself she didn't care. In an attempt to rid herself of unwanted feelings, she practically skipped into the lounge, her face lighting up at the sight of Fred flicking through the channels, finally settling on a football game. An empty mars bar packet was next to him on the arm of the chair. How many of them did he go through? Lilly shook her head and threw herself down next to him, throwing her legs over his and resting her back on the arm.
'Hey, Fred.' She said, grinning. She looked him over, since when did he look half decent? He wasn't wearing the official 'uniform', just a white vest and some sweats, but she could see his muscles through the thin material.
The poor man looked startled and he glanced at her. 'Hi.' He said warily, never one with a way with words.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
John had meant to go back to his room, but he'd strayed off and ended up down near Wade's bedroom. He could hear giggling from inside, and then a moan. Feeling a mixture of excitement and disgust, he walked off, examining the place. When would the excitement begin? He was being pushed around meaninglessly. Nothing happened here, nothing happened at Xaviers. Was this all there was? Well at least Wade was having fun. Now if he could just find some of his own. Bradley had stitched up the cut on his head earlier and he almost liked his little war wound, only there were no girls here to show it off too.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Eve wondered if anyone had spotted her car and told the police. Not that anyone around here cared for anything but themselves. She sighed. This place felt more like a prison than she thought Xaviers had. Being here had made her realise how good she had had it, and how good she wanted it to be again. Moving to her room, she had a shower and wandered around the small box shaped bedroom, examining cupboards and drawers. What had she expected to find? A secret passageway? John seemed bored here too. It felt like a test, trying to make them understand what they had once owned. Not that they were going to be leaving anytime soon, especially if they were sent for hour long breaks. They needed to get the tests over with, and quick.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
'You like mars bars, huh?' She asked cheerily, half expecting him to offer her one, but he seemed cleaned out. 'I like 'em too, and kitkats.' Fred could feel her staring at him and it was easy to say he'd never felt so awkward in his life. He was good with women! They were the source of his tattoos - especially the bendy ones, the ones that did the impossible and put things where normal people could only dream of. They deserved a place on him somewhere.
'Isn't Wade around?' He was staring at the television, bored. Fred hadn't been to see the new people yet, but he doubted they'd be staying for long. They seemed to like to fight though. Maybe he could build a boxing ring and maybe the girls could wrestle. The fantasy enveloped his mind and he was brought back to reality by a cough. Lilly hadn't answered his question but he didn't press it. 'There's a programme on about fat people. Do you wanna watch it?'
Lilly blinked and bit down a sigh. She shifted on the sofa, legs still over his, and stared at the television. She knew Fred got woman, they almost flocked to him, judging by his tattoos. So why was he being such an uptight cunt? She frowned, maybe Kate was right and she really was just an ugly fat idiot. She was determined to prove her wrong, and make Wade jealous, although that was just a bonus. She sat up, startling Fred who glanced at her nervously, as if she was a bomb that would go off at any minute. ‘Am I ugly?’ She asked loudly. He swallowed. ‘Uh – not really.’ ‘Good.’ She answered, and then she kissed him.

Eve peered round a corner, finding a gym. It looked pretty fancy, there was even a swimming pool. It looked inviting, the water bright blue and so still it looked like glass. She would of liked to jump in but she didn’t have a swimming costume, she had left her clothes in the car, and there was no way she would go skinny dipping. Someone was on the treadmill and she inched in, sitting down on a bench, craning her neck to see who it was. She instantly regretted her decision when she realised. Bradley noticed her almost at once and switched off the machine, jumping of. His vest stuck to him, revealing hard muscles that she had never noticed before. He grabbed the bottom of it, rubbing his forehead with the material and she swallowed. ‘Hey.’ He said, dropping down onto the bench next to her. He glanced across, noticing her staring. ‘What?’ She cleared her throat and looked straight ahead. ‘Sorry, I mean, no! I’m not sorry. It’s your fault I’m here.’ He seemed amused, which infuriated her even more. ‘Because I told Zero?’ ‘No, because you ki-,’ she paused. Why would him kissing her give her the right to come tracking her down? ‘Yes, because you told Zero.’ ‘You weren’t going to say that.’ He noted. ‘You were going to say it’s ‘cos I kissed you.’ He said matter of factly, running a hand through his hair and smiling slightly. ‘So?’ She snapped, anger bubbling inside of her. He chuckled. ‘So, I don’t suppose you’d fight me off if I did it again.’ He turned to look at her, his eyes challenging. Eve’s throat had suddenly turned dry and unconsciously she leaned into him, eyes flickering shut. She felt him shift, his own lips brushing hers ever so slightly, and then his weight lifted from the bench. ‘See you back at the tests.’ Her eyes snapped open and she stared at his

Pulling her damp hair up into a bun, Eve sighed and leant back against the bench. Perhaps it was a dream – though seeing what she had seen in her life, and teaching the students she did, Eve knew better than to blame everything on a false reality. Stryker wanted them to be on some assault course now, although John had sniggered that all the noise and smoke would give their place away, and someone would find them. Hadn’t he been told, Stryker had laughed, that this was an abandoned area of warehouses that no one really gave a fuck about. But Eve wasn’t sure if John even wanted to leave. There was something about this place that was keeping them here, even if the lessons revolved on the art of killing somebody, it attracted Eve. Excitement? They were almost in a limbo, torn between two destinations, freedom and death. She’d managed to research Stryker briefly, but somehow, standing beside him gave a completely different sensation to what she had felt staring at his file. The man had an air around him, threatening without even trying, intimidating. What was with the uniform though? The only thing he ordered around were a bunch of misfits and children – what Colonel caged children and trained them into murderers? The warped reality seemed to hurt her less than she thought it would. Looking at his photo had made her angry, and as she slipped the guns into the boot, Eve had promised herself that she would use it. But somehow this man knew about her, she could feel it in the way he spoke to her, asked her what she could do even though he already understood, probably way more than she even did herself. Who was William Stryker? ‘I don’t think looking at them will help you.’ Logan’s voice came from the doorway, and Eve glanced over her shoulder. ‘And I don’t think Stryker makes custom made swimwear, so you’re out of luck.’ He had been on about the treadmills, and she offered him a tight smile. ‘Just came to think.’ She cringed at how it sounded. She came to think in a gym? ‘It was empty, so I thought it’d be okay.’ Logan nodded in understanding. Even if the place was big, it felt so claustrophobic. It smelt like a hospital, and with his acute senses he could taste the drugs, the sterilized equipment. Eve probably couldn’t, but she’d see it all soon enough. Stryker would use it as a warning, almost, passing by on their way to another room, and he’d feel the need to show it, maybe hope something was been demonstrated down below. ‘I didn’t mean to bring John.’ Logan scoffed slightly, not at the lie, but at the way she thought it necessary to tell him. ‘You don’t need to think of an excuse when that kids involved. He causes his own trouble.’ ‘I just thought he deserved answers too, y’know?’ ‘We all want answers, Eve.’ Logan had waited years for so many answers, and yet they still felt unanswered. Stryker didn’t answer, he ordered – made more questions. ‘You shouldn’t have come here. He’ll make you believe he can help you.’ Suddenly feeling angry, Eve clenched her fists. 'I can take care of myself Logan. I came to get you, and when these tests are over, we're going back to Xaviers. I don't want help from anybody, okay? There is nothing Stryker can offer me that I don't already have. Apart from you.' they stared at one another then, and Logan bowed his head slowly. 'Ready to be rescued by a girl?' _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Fred wasn’t sure what to do, but his hands gripped onto Lilly’s thighs when she threw herself at him. The first thought had been that she might be squashing his mars bar, but then her lips were against his and he pulled her closer indistinctly. The woman pulled away for a second, and he stared at her, confused. She had tasted the chocolate on his mouth, and with the remains of vodka still stirring inside her, she felt a little sick. ‘Lilly?’ he asked gruffly, moving back as she went to kiss him again. 'Don't get me wrong, I love to kiss women. Pretty women like yourself. But aren’t you Wade’s girl?’ suddenly he felt her hand across his face and although the slap didn’t hurt, it shocked him for a moment as she clambered off. Lilly had jsut been turned down by Fred. She watched him, shocked and a little upset before storming out. Why did nobody want her anymore? What was wrong with her? It as that Kate bitch, who Wade was probably fucking right now. Her chest constricted and Lilly hit out against the wall like it had just insulted her. These new people had come and invaded her space, ruined everything. She heard Fred call out with an offering of a mars bar, but then the television blared loudly and he became easily destracted. Fred wasn't going to run around after her, she wasn't his problem. He'd just done Wade a big favour. That cunt didn't know what he'd had, and Fred didn't know why he hadn't acted when Lilly had jumped him, but now it was over he wasn't interested. The next test wouldn’t be for an hour and as Lilly walked down the corridor, she tried to think of a way to ruin it for them. She didn’t want them here, didn’t want to have to share her place with new, stupid people. People that burnt her, and kissed her to trick her. Eve would be another problem, another woman that Wade could throw himself at. Hadn't they seen what she could do? Because she could get so much darker. Bradley walked past her, a towel over his shoulder and she stared at him, thinking. Since when did all the men look so appealing? The man stared at her and ran a hand through his hair, still damp from the sweat. ‘Outside somewhere, I don’t know. Stryker said he’d tell us when it was time.’ Little did either of them know that Stryker had changed his mind. The boy, John, was too arrogant for his own good and he didn’t need someone with more backtalk than actual power. Without his lighter, what good was that kid? Stryker needed men, people that answered commands and got the job done. As they all moved outside into the yard, Stryker stood by one of the emptied articulated lorries. Months back it had been stranded here, after Wade had finished off the drivers off and they used it sometimes, mostly when Wade got bored and decided to lock Zero in. Bullet holes pierced the sides where the man had tried to shoot his way out. John stared at the thing with dull interest. 'Roadtrip?' he asked, and Wade laughed at him. 'I was going to say that. What d'ya fancy?' John's eyes slid over towards Lilly. He knew what he fancied alright, he'd just had enough of being knocked out, battered and bruised by it. A sneer creased his lips and he turned away, thumbing the lighter in his pocket.

‘Eve!’ Stryker smiled grimly. ‘I’m glad you could join us.’ His eyes flickered to Logan who was standing beside her and narrowed ever so slightly, but he didn’t give anything away. ‘This is your final test.’ He stated. Eve frowned. ‘You said there were lots.’ She questioned, glancing around at the others. Bradley wasn’t here and she wasn’t sure whether to be happy or sad. Wade was leant against an old lorry, arms crossed over his chest, arrogant smirk on his face. She was startled to see Lilly sitting on top of one of the containers, giving her such a fierce glare that if looks could kill she would be on her way to the morgue. ‘It’s taking too long - people are getting restless and I have missions to plan.’ Stryker informed her. He rose one hand to the lorry. ‘Yourself and John will go in. Get out, you live.’ Eve gaped. ‘I can’t do that!’ She glared. ‘Why can’t you just let us go, huh? Do you get off on things like this? It wouldn’t surprise me.’ She took a step towards him, almost threateningly, but Victor was there, holding onto her arm. ‘You remember our deal, Eve.’ Stryker said flatly. ‘Go in, now.’ John obeyed immediately and Eve reached out, as if to stop him, but what could she do? She shook Victor off of her and head held high, she marched towards the lorry. It wouldn’t be hard if she and John just worked together, they could easily get out. They would be allowed into the team and she could leave with Logan. She kept these thoughts swirling in her mind as she jumped up onto the lorry, trying to ignore the feeling of despair that washed over her when Wade slammed the double doors shut and they were plunged into darkness. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ‘Hey, Zero!’ Lilly grinned, brushing her hair over one shoulder. The man glanced up at her, blinking before he scowled and looked away. Lilly’s smile dropped and she slammed her fist into the container. What was wrong with her? ‘Have you turned into some kind of super slut now then?’ Wade called up to her, grinning. ‘That’s your new girlfriends job.’ Lilly retorted, sticking her middle finger up at him. He laughed. ‘Fred told me about your little moment.’ He walked towards her, stopping suddenly when a shadow wrapped around his ankle. He glanced down at it and scoffed. ‘You can’t kill me. Y’know, Kate’s nice, good in bed. I think I’ll stick with the upgrade.’ He was still watching the shadow wind up his leg and he frowned when it disappeared, peering back up at Lilly. She was focused on the lorry, shadows swirling and battling with each other as they crept up to it, seeping in through the bullet holes. Inside, someone shouted. She smiled. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The lorry stank of blood and sweat. Eve stumbled to the back, her hands feeling at the walls for some kind of lead. Bits of light shone in here and there but not enough so she could calm down. It was like being locked in a cage. She coughed and almost fell straight into John, who was stood flicking his lighter. He scowled at her, as if this was all her fault, which it kind of was. She ignored him and walked up to one of the holes, putting one eye up to it. She couldn’t see the others, but she could hear them and she retreated, wondering what the hell to do now. Suddenly a movement caught her eye and she spun, watching as a heavy blackness oozed through one of the holes, like oil. ‘What the fuck is that?’ John cried, backing away into the middle of the lorry.

Stumbling back, Eve pulled John behind her and he happily obliged, eyes darting around as the blackness seeped through like tar. ‘It’s her, she’s doing this!’ John snapped, but his voice wavering and he brandished his lighter around, as if hoping the flame would scare them away, but instead the dark creatures relished in the new found light and grew larger. ‘What kind of power is a shadow!’ he was yelling to his left and then up at the ceiling where he heard a bang. Eve stayed quiet, back to back with John who kept moving around. This hadn’t been part of the deal; Stryker had never said he was going to threaten them with monsters. The word made her laugh in her head, and it spilled out of her lips nervously. ‘What’s so fucking funny?’ John hissed, stepping back and pulling Eve towards him as a shield. Well wasn’t that gentlemanly bravery for you?
‘Keep quiet.’ She hissed, listening to the footprints that slowly dented across the roof of the lorry. Lilly must have jumped onto it, but instead of a girlish laugh, she heard a feral growl and Victor’s nails clawed through the metal, puncturing holes that dropped light through. With a roll of her eyes, she heard a yell to the left of her and hoped that maybe they were getting a taste of their own medicine.
Fred’s hand wrapped around Lilly’s middle and he pulled the girl to the ground, forcing her against the opposing lorry when she writhed in his grasp. ‘This is their test, not yours.’ He muttered, gripping her elbow when she swung back. Even if she was small, and wasn’t his, he liked how her body fit so easily beneath him. Perhaps that was why Fred liked to be the size and sturdiness that he was, it made the woman fall against him so frail and he felt so powerful. Lifting her off the ground, he held her up like a baby and laughed into her ear. ‘I can always lock you in the next one if you like, doll.’ Wade wrinkled his nose at the little pet name and pointed his finger to his mouth, pulling a face. Since when did those two bond together? Or even give a shit about what happened? They worked in a team, but they didn’t need to be friends.
‘You really are some kind of superslut.’ Wade muttered, staring down at his hands and then back up towards the lorry. The shadows had fallen back out of the holes, and a trickle of smoke floated through the gap in the top. Victor had lazily pounced off like the feline he was, and was now staring down Kate who had a very low vest on. Even if she was more upper class than uppercut, she was downright fit and he wouldn’t mind getting into a tussle with her. She patted Victor's chest, rolling her eyes as he growled.
‘Calm down, big boy.’
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
John had set fire to his sleeve in his panic and wouldn’t stay still long enough for Eve to put it out. She slammed him against the wall, groaning as they smashed together like fish in a barrel. It was hard to see where she was going in the dark, but the gust of wind that brushed between their bodies extinguished the flame and they both breathed a sigh of relief. ‘Can you just stop being a prat for once?’ she snarled, pushing his shoulder hard and moving back to the middle of the lorry. John stayed back against the wall, pouting like a sullen child. ‘Oh, get over yourself, John. We need to get out of here-.’
‘You find a way then, Boss. It’s your fault we’re fucking in here!’
‘I know, alright!’ Eve swung around and her hair fell over her face, eyes angry. ‘I shouldn’t have done what I did, so just shut up and work with me, here. If we get out, you can get back to school and tell all your little friends how exciting a time you had before I got us locked in a fucking tonka trunk, okay?’
‘You’re different than you were at school.’ He muttered, moving around and feeling the gap in the door. Putting his flame to it, he grinned as the metal started to swell. If he applied heat into the right place, they could just kick the door. But he hadn’t accounted for the steel bars that ran along the side and bottom, and Eve was snatching the lighter out of his hand again.
‘Stop it. Stop flashing it around everywhere, it gets you nowhere.’
‘At least you can use your power when you like, - not that you even do, what’s the point of having a power if you don’t even use it? I have to carry this around with me everywhere. I know what everyone thinks, but I’m better than them, even if I do need this to-.’ He had been about to say help, but John would never admit that he needed help with anything.
Exhaling slowly, Eve brushed her hair behind her ears and moved forward, hands out. ‘You’re not going to pray are you?’ John asked, and her jaw tightened but she didn’t speak. She hadn’t really tried this before, not greatly, but being at Xavier’s since she was nineteen had helped control her powers slightly better than she would have done out on her own. The metal creaked cautiously. But it wasn’t her. A crowbar stuck through the gap and both of them gawped at it, confused. ‘Are you doing that?’ John whispered.

‘Get off me!’ Lilly cried, arching into Fred’s chest and making him grunt as he pushed her away from him. She stumbled and fell into Wade, who’s hands instinctively shot out, catching her. Tears pricked her eyes but she brushed them away angrily, slamming her hands into Wade’s chest causing him to take a step back in surprise. She ignored the shocked looks they were sending her way, and went to stand beside Stryker, glaring at anyone who dared look at her. ‘What are you doing?’ Stryker cried angrily, motioning to Victor, who stormed over to where Bradley had started hammering at the lorry. Bradley spun round. ‘This isn’t right! Leaving them in there to die - you know they won’t get out. Why can’t you just let them go?’ He shouted, wielding the crowbar. Just as Victor grabbed the smaller man’s collar, the metal of the lorry dented outwards and they all turned to stare at it as it shifted and writhed. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Eve ignored the panicking John, and held her hands out in front of her, frowning in concentration. She twisted her fingers and the back of the lorry groaned, a dent appearing in the hard metal. A thin sheen of sweat appeared on her forehead and she breathed in heavily, moving one of her legs back. It had been too long since she had used her powers and now she was trying to destroy the back of a lorry? She almost didn’t think the metal would move anymore when she thrust her hands forward again and the dent grew, beside her John seemed to stop being an idiot and flicked his lighter open, throwing a stream of fire into the dent, watching as it melted away. A crack appeared and then several ran along the side of it, light pouring in. The noises outside had faded away and either Stryker had given up on them, or they were all stood in shock. She allowed a small smile and dropped her arms for a second before she raised them, throwing them forwards. The metal screeched and then suddenly it dropped away, landing on the ground outside with a huge crash. Eve dropped her arms back down to her sides, panting heavily. She stayed still as John bounded out of the lorry, grinning, and jumping down onto the ground. Stryker was smiling. ‘Well done, Eve.’ He didn’t even look at John. ‘You can go back to your room now, we’ll talk further tomorrow.’ She nodded, too tired to argue, or put up a fight. All she felt like doing now was sprawling out on a sofa and stuffing her face with food. The others dispersed, most in shock, they hadn’t realised how powerful she really was. As she passed, Lilly offered a smile which Eve returned carefully, she wouldn’t mind a friend. Bradley stayed and Eve glanced at him, the smile dropping. ‘You did good.’ He said. She scoffed. ‘I’m glad you approve.’ He smiled and took a step towards her but before he got any further, her arm flew out and she slapped him across his face, causing his head to snap to the left. ‘Don’t touch me again.’ She snarled.

Hunter’s head had been pounding all day, and as he cautiously edged into the kitchen, he sat himself down gingerly, a sigh escaping his lips, almost pained. There had been lessons as usual today, Xavier saying that Eve would keep John safe, although Hunter was more worried about how safe Eve was. That kid could stand anything – dig himself holes and fall in them, but climb himself back out and punch the person that had knocked him down. Eve on the other hand, acted on whim and dreams. She floated around from place to place, idea to idea, never really paying attention to what was happening, and just doing it to see if she could. He wasn’t sure what he had done the night before, when they’d stopped in the hall and he’d seen Eve. For a second Hunter had believed he was dreaming – she usually cropped up there after all – but then when Xavier came to him asking if he knew where she’d vanished too, he’d tiredly but two and two together to finally make the four. But the words he’d said, he didn’t remember, and his tongue felt heavy in his mouth so he didn’t bother speaking the rest of the day. Self-pity or hungover, it didn’t really matter, everyone was too busy being absorbed in their own teenage dramas; was she pregnant, where could they get beer, was he cheating on her?
‘Logan’s with them. Give them time.’ Xavier smiled wryly from the doorframe. Hunter turned his head to him before looking back at the table top with a nod.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Kate was good at retrieving information, items, and people. She’d found him, after all. Stryker watched her as she headed back inside, Wade walking slowly behind her. All of the people here were different, and she was something special. He’d keep an eye on her. He’d been out with Victor and the brunette had managed to get past the wild cat and held Stryker up against a wall, manicured fingers around his throat. She’d asked to join him, or else kill him there on the spot. She’d had no gun, but he’d admired her courage, something Stryker rarely did because courage led to stupidity. To prove herself, Kate had slipped into a bank and sauntered out with a wad of fifty pound notes. Not only could she pass through brick and metal, she could mould things to pass with her, too.
The only problem Stryker held here, with this group was that feelings got the better of them in every situation. Victor didn’t necessarily grow attached, but he grew angered and any emotion hindered them and they needed to learn to control it. Bradley had proved that today, although Eve had managed to escape without his help, he had still tried. John was still shaking, and Lilly honestly thought he was going to burst into tears. The glare he flashed at her was full of so much anger and hate; she felt the wind knock out of her. 'Does that mean I'm part of this now?' He asked, voice deep. 'After you've tried to kill me, twice, do I get to-.' Bradley shook his head besides John and the boy stopped, words trapped in his throat. That was it?
Eve went to her bedroom and Logan followed after her, shutting the door and jamming a chair under the handle. She was tired and didn’t really want to talk to anyone anymore. In all honesty she just wanted to cry, but kept it in as she slipped out of her clothes and stood, underwear clad, before the smeared mirror. It was cracked slightly down one side, and some of the veneer had been scratched off. Logan had arrived the same day she had, and the three of them had somehow formed a bond, although Hunter had slowly slipped out of the mould and started to take to drinking. He’d be okay back at the mansion now, she decided, slipping under the duvet and smiling as Logan sat on the edge. He was almost like a guard dog, her protector. Nothing hung between them, they were just friends. Two loners needing to find solace in the chaos.

Lilly sat on the floor of the lounge, legs up to her chest, packet of mars bars next to her. She leant back against the radiator, letting it burn her through the thin material of her tank top. She grabbed a mars bar, ripping the rapper off violently and shoving it whole into her mouth, giving her the look that she closely resembled a hamster. Her face pulled into a frown when Kate sauntered in, plopping herself down into one of the sofas and switching on the television. Her eyes slid over to where Lilly was sat and she smiled. ‘You suit that look.’ She commented. Lilly rolled her eyes and looked away, swallowing the mars bar. ‘Listen, honey, I really don’t want to be ‘enemies’ with you. So how about we forget about that little incident and move on, hm? I mean, come on, you didn’t think Wade actually loved you, did you?’ She smiled, patting the cushion next to her. Lilly gave her a blank look. ‘Sorry, honey, but I’m not interested in being your BFF, so how about you go paint nails with someone else?’ She tilted her head to the side and smiled overly sweetly, waggling her fingers. Kate got to her feet. ‘Little brat.’ She snarled, storming out. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ‘So what’s happened to your plan?’ Eve stretched her legs out under the covers, relishing in the clean, smooth bedsheets. Her muscles ached and she pulled the duvet up to her chin, her hair fanning out behind her. She shrugged. ‘Tomorrow night.’ Logan seemed amused. ‘You’re going to leave - with John and me, tomorrow?’ ‘That’s what I said.’ She snapped, annoyed he didn’t believe her. He held up his hands in defence. ‘Okay, okay, I’ll be ready.’ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Bradley lay on his back in bed, the thin sheet up to his waist, his bare chest revealed. One hand was behind his head, the other resting on his stomach. His head was turned to one side, the side she had slapped him. Her fingertips had burned his skin and left an imprint, one that he couldn’t seem to get out of his head. Twice he had kissed her now and twice he had left feeling just as annoyed as before. It wasn’t enough, it was never enough, he wanted more of her. He wanted to run his hands down her sides, through that gold hair. He wanted the feel of her beneath him, her slender body pressed against his, moaning his name. He sat up, eyes darting in the darkness. She was only down the hall, he could do it, hell why shouldn’t he? He knew she wanted him just as much, the way she had reacted in the gym. His mind was made up before he even got the door, and he swung it open, blinking in the bright light of the corridor. Her room was only two doors down and he strode across, pausing when he heard voices. Logan was in there! He leant his back against the wall, frowning as he listened to their conversation. ‘...-tomorrow night.’ He tilted his head to the side. Tomorrow night? What did that mean? Were they planning to leave, he almost laughed. That wouldn’t happen, as if none of them hadn’t tried already. He had to talk her out of it, she would be killed, he couldn’t now though, not with that stupid lumberjack in there. Tomorrow, he decided, tomorrow he would talk to her, make her see sense.

‘Get over it, honey!’ Lilly snarled, opening another chocolate wrapper but chucking it down before it reached her lips. ‘Fuck!’ running a hand through her hair, she sighed, breathing heavily. Who did she think she was? Little Miss peace maker. This wasn’t an audition to be Miss America – they didn’t need to be friends or fake smiles for anyone’s sake. No one here cared if you got on with them, you just had to get on with it. The work, the job, the fucking nonsense they were made to do which never got them anywhere. This was all becoming so tedious, now more obvious with the new people added, and the lack of activities that had happened today. Lilly had been made to skulk around, waiting. Waiting for what? More people to turn up, the world to end? Kate to blow up? That one would be good. Wade hung in the door awkwardly, offering a lopsided smirk. Not moving from her spot, Lilly put up two fingers, returning back to her chocolate and the television she could just see around the sofa. There was a grunt in the doorway and Fred came in, sitting down beside her and helping himself to her food supplies. Wade suddenly looked helpless and turned to leave without a word.
'Thanks.' Lilly muttered quietly, and Fred raised a chocolate bar with a shrug.
'No problem, doll.' A few minutes past before she let herself rest against his arm, feeling somehow protected and less vulnerable to the feelings Kate inflicted upon her. Fred wasn’t Wade, far from it, but he was here right now and he was fun. She could do with some fun. And that must have been where she fell asleep, because when morning came Lilly was strewn across the floor, the radiator cold, wrappers littering the floor. Fred had slumped off to bed sometime in the middle of the night, but the television fizzed, the screen rolling on stand-by. She'd been about to get up, when she saw a foot hanging over the edge of the sofa. For a moment she'd thought maybe Fred had stayed after all, but standing up she saw the naked back of Kate, spread across the naked chest of Wade. Her jaw dropped open and bile rose in her throat, mouth suddenly very wet.
Wade found Kate storming away from the lounge, and after seeing Fred with Lilly, he’d grabbed her, slammed her against the wall and demanded they go back to his room. Without a word they had tussled around, and in the heat of the moment they’d ended back in the lounge. They didn’t pay any attention to Lilly on the floor, and headed straight for the sofa. Their moans were stifled by hands and flesh, the act over in an instant, but leaving both of them panting. It was only when he woke up to see Lilly staring at him, that Wade suddenly began to regret what he had done. If only a little bit.

Eve had fallen asleep almost instantly, surprisingly, although Logan didn’t have as much luck, curled up uncomfortably in the chair by the door. She’d asked him to stay for protection, and said he could sleep on the bed, even at the end if he was that bothered, but Logan had decided he didn’t want to be a house cat, and sat in the stiff chair. Protection from what, though? Maybe she just didn’t want to be alone – he didn’t bother to ask. He understood what it was like to not want to be alone, although Logan had never really been anything but alone. Sometimes he liked the company of a woman, but they got too much for him with their idle talk and their misunderstandings of what he was. He was a loner, and he liked it that way, it was easier, but for now he would stay and help a friend, who had gotten into this mess to help him.
