Emmy-Jane Gloster stood before the large gate that enclosed Charles Xaviers school from the rest of the world; a rucksack slung over her shoulders and her hair pushed up inside her hood. It was raining, the kind of rain that was so fine it got you soaked even if you were stood in it for a simple second; and the clouds were grey, heavy and angry looking, all of them waiting to burst with a new fresh down pour.
At least it wasn't thundering, she thought to herself, trying to find the happy side in her trip to the school for gifted mutants. Shifting the bag on her shoulder, Jane let a sigh slowly easy out of her lips; the air before her cold so she could see her breath. Her boots were tracked with mud, along the bottom and up the back where she'd ran and splashed in the puddles. Nails damaged and far from their one manicured state. Lifting a hand, she rubbed at her temples, the woman closing her eyes as she tried to stay upright and catch her breath.
A year ago, Jane had been happy and at home. She had her fiance a wedding and people that loved her.
Pushing open the gates, they gave a creak and it hurt her ears as she stumbled forward and began to walk along the drive and towards the school. The lights were on in the downstairs room and someone was pushing a motorbike along the gravel. Jane didn't even bother to look up as she kept her eyes on her feet, one before the other; her head still beating hard, she clamped her hands over her ears as though it would make the pain go away.
'Are you okay?' A mans voice came and Cyclops looked up from his bike as Jane began to slow, her feet now dragging; head shaking angrily as the pain continued.
'My head hurts,' She murmured weakly, moving away as Cylops came over and tried to steady her. 'Don't,' Her voice showed warning and Scott backed off a little bit.
'You don't look well. l - Just let me help you-' Pausing in his words, he watched as the woman slipped down onto an exhausted heap onto the floor before his feet. 'Jean - Storm!' Bending down, he lifted Janes head and tilted it to the side to see if she was still breathing. The door shot open and out bounded Bobby who'd been looking from the window. 'Is your Mother coming?' Jane asked, rolling over on the bed so she was laying on her back, she held the notepad above her and crossed out a name as Daniel shook his head.
'She's busy at work-' 'That or she doesn't like me,' She put in, interrupting Daniel who simply took the notepad off of her and placed it on the bedside table. Leaning back onto the bed, he shuffled over towards her and captured her lips, brushing them hard against his own.
'She's not the one thats marrying you, so it doesn't matter,' He smirked, pulling away and brushing her fringe back so he could see her full face. Her brown eyes shining full of excitement at him. The thought of getting married spinning through her head.
'They say if you marry someone, you marry their family,' Jane muttered, rolling away from him and standing up to look out of the window. Giving a growl of frustration, Daniel rolled himself off of the bed and moved to put his arms around her waist, his chin resting on her shoulder.
'Y'know what else they say?' His lips kissed the side of her neck and she gave a murmur of 'What?' 'You can't chose your family,' He grinned as she gave a laugh and spun around to face him, kissing his jaw.
The wedding was in a large church, the windows covered in bright colors and pictures of bible stories. She'd wanted to have it here, because it was where her Mother had, had her wedding to her Father. Thirty years ago. It had been beautiful, so her Aunt had said, and so the pictures showed. Jane didn't know, she hadn't asked, she knew better than that. Three years ago Amelia Gloster had passed away, and her Father had seemingly lost the will to do anything that wasn't watching TV or staring at the lounge walls as if they were to do anything.
The day came fast, the 1st of April; her Mothers birthday. Daniel had pulled some strings, and they'd managed to set the day months in advance. Everything was set to a T, what was to go wrong, wasn't to have been known. Not until it happened.
Jane was walking up the isle, white dress pulling along the floor as the organ played and mutters of beautiful went past her ears. Then she heard something else, she heard a womans voice. It was soft and seductive, and she didn't know it. Turning, her eyes caught a glimpse of a blond girl sitting in the front row. She was smiling at Daniel, a smirk on her plump lips. Her skin orange and tanned. She heard her voice again, but her lips didn't move; the smirk still clear as day. Then she saw it, her eyes closed and she saw something she'd never wanted to see. Daniel with another woman?
Dropping her bouquet, she gave a gasp and turned back, running out of the church and not caring what had happened or how that had happened. But it did. And she saw it. And her Fiance had cheated on her.
And it broke her heart.
